2021: Final season was highlighted by capturing his first Pac-12 title, securing it with a third-attempt make at 17-1 β¦ at NCAA West Prelims, cleared 16-10 ΒΎ to finish 30th overall β¦ second at the West Coast Relays with a make of 16-11 β¦ won the UW-WSU Dual clearing 16-8 ΒΌ β¦ indoors, competed three times unattached, getting a best clearance of 17-2 ΒΎ at the UW Indoor Preview β¦ also cleared 17-1 ΒΎ at the UW Invitational and 17-1 Β½ at the Husky Classic.
2020 (Indoor Track; Outdoor Season Canceled): Earned All-America honors once again during the indoor season, as he qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships but did not get to compete as the meet was canceled due to COVID-19 β¦ earned a spot at nationals via a season-best clearance of 17-11 at the Husky Classic β¦ won his first five meets of the indoor season before taking runner-up honors at the MPSF Championships with a clearance of 17-7 1/4 β¦ also made 17-7 1/4 at the Don Kirby Invite in New Mexico.
2019: Reached his first NCAA Outdoor Championship in the pole vault in his first full outdoor season since 2016, earning All-America Second Team honors β¦ at NCAAs in Austin, cleared 17-6 1/2 to finish in a tie for 15th β¦ advanced through NCAA West Prelims in dramatic fashion, getting consecutive third attempt clearances, the last one at 17-7, to make the top-12 β¦ fourth-place at Pac-12s with a make of 16-11 1/2 β¦ set an outdoor PR at the National Relay Championships in Arkansas with a clearance of 17-8 1/2 to take third and go to tenth on the outdoor top-10 list β¦ won the UW-WSU Dual vault with another make of 17-8 1/2, held indoors due to weather β¦ won the Stanford Invite pole vault, going 17-7 β¦ second at the Trojan Invitational with a make of 17-5 1/2 β¦ redshirted the indoor season, competing four times unattached β¦ had a new lifetime-best at the Last Chance Elite Meet, making 18-1 1/4 unattached β¦ also won the Husky Classic at 17-6 1/2 and was second at the UW Invitational at 17-7 1/4.
2018: Another standout season in the pole vault indoors but had a second outdoor season derailed by an injury β¦ indoors, earned All-America Second Team honors for the second time as he finished 10th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, clearing 17-8 Β½ β¦ qualified for NCAA Indoors by making a new PR of 18-1 at the UW Indoor Open β¦ became the first Husky man to win back-to-back MPSF pole vault titles as he won with a 17-4 Β½ clearance β¦ opened the year with a win at the UW Indoor Preview, clearing 17-7 β¦ a knee injury outdoors forced him to redshirt after winning the outdoor season opener, the Trojan Invite, with a make of 17-4 Β½.
2017: Advanced to his first NCAA Championship finals during the indoor season and captured the MPSF Championships pole vault title in a breakout sophomore season β¦ at the NCAA Indoor Championships, cleared 17-6 Β½ to tie for 11th and earn All-America Second Team distinction β¦ raised his PR by nearly a foot compared to his freshman year ... entered the indoor season with a lifetime-best of 17-0 1/4, but then went 17-3 at the UW Invitational for an early PR ... followed that with a 17-4 1/2 make at the Husky Classic ... made another big leap at the Air Force Collegiate, clearing 17-11 ... won the MPSF conference title with another PR of 17-11 1/4, tying for fourth on the UW top-10 list β¦ outdoors, his season was interrupted abruptly when he needed to have his appendix removed, returning just a few weeks later to compete at the Pac-12 Championships where he managed to still place fourth with a make of 16-3 Β½ β¦ missed a month of competition due to the appendix procedure β¦ advanced to the NCAA West Preliminaries for the second time, and had an outdoor season-best clearance of 17-2 ΒΎ, tying for 15th and just missing an NCAA Outdoor trip by one bar β¦ opened his outdoor season with a 17-0 ΒΎ clearance at the Trojan Invitational for a victory, and also cleared 17-0 ΒΎ at the Beach Invitational β¦ earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.
2016: An impressive freshman season in the pole vault, as he scored at the Pac-12 Championships and qualified for NCAA West Prelims β¦ finished fifth at his first Pac-12 meet in Seattle, clearing 16-8 ΒΎ β¦ made it over 16-10 at NCAA West Prelims, tying for 16th and likely missing NCAAs by just one bar β¦ cleared 17-feet for the first time in his career at the Ken Shannon Invitational, which he won at 17-0 ΒΌ β¦ competed at the U.S. Junior Championships in June, tying for eighth at 16-2 ΒΎ β¦ opened his outdoor season tying for a win at the Pac-12 vs Big Ten Invite in Tempe, going 16-11 Β½ β¦ runner-up at the Pepsi Team Invite with a vault of 16-10 ΒΎ β¦ third in the UW-WSU Dual in inclement weather, clearing 15-9 ΒΎ β¦ indoors, scored a point at the MPSF Championships with an eighth-place finish with a season-best make of 16-10 β¦ cleared 16-8 at the UW Indoor Open for fifth β¦ a 16-7 ΒΌ clearance at the UW Invitational to tie for sixth.
High School and Personal: Born in Helena, Montana β¦ parents are Barbara and Peter Smith β¦ has one younger brother, Daniel β¦ father, Peter, also competed in the pole vault β¦ won the 2015 Montana AA title in the pole vault, and set the Montana state record with a clearance of 16-feet, 5-inches helping his team win the state title β¦ raised his PR by two feet between his junior and senior years β¦ was second at the state meet as a junior with a make of 14-0 β¦ his 16-5 clearance ranked 22nd nationally in 2015 β¦ competed in the Dempsey at the 2015 UW High School Invitational, taking first in the pole vault with a make of 15-5 β¦ graduated with a 3.9 GPA and made honor roll for 23 straight quarters in high school β¦ considering studying microbiology and anatomy.
