March 05, 2025 | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – The Washington women's basketball team (19-12, 9-9 Big Ten) sped to a 79-65 win over Minnesota (20-11, 8-10 Big Ten) Wednesday afternoon inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
With its 19th win of the season, Washington tied the most wins during Tina Langley's four-year tenure (19-15 record in 2022-23) and tied the most wins since the 2016-17 season.
The Huskies maintained a lead for most of the Wednesday's outing but gained strong separation in the fourth quarter, outscoring Minnesota 25-17 in the final frame to pull away with its first conference tournament win in the Big Ten.
Elle Ladine led all Washington scorers with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting, while also adding eight rebounds and five assists.
She became the first Husky since Giuliana Mendiola in 2004 to post that statline in a postseason game.
Dalayah Daniels and Sayvia Sellers each put up 15 points for the Huskies. Hannah Stines added 14 points and six minutes in 39 minutes of action.
Offense got off to a slow start for both teams as the Dawgs held a narrow 16-12 edge after one, 12 of which came at the hands of Ladine.
After shooting 43.8 percent in the first quarter, Washington shot over 50 percent the next three, connecting on 55 percent (30-55) overall and limiting Minnesota to a 39 percent clip.
The Gophers outscored the Dawgs by two in the second quarter (18-16), as Washington took a 32-30 lead into the halftime locker room.
A three-pointer from Sellers followed by a three from Chloe Briggs the next time down the court kickstarted the UW second half offense, as Sellers connected on all three of her triples in the third quarter.
The Huskies glided on a 12-0 run, extending a 40-38 third quarter lead to 52-38, besting the Gophers 22-18 in the frame.
Washington saved its best quarter for last, connecting on 8-of-12 shots (66.7%) and limiting Minnesota to 0-5 from three-point range while winning the quarter 25-17.
The Huskies recorded 20 assists on 30 field goals and outrebounded the Gophers 32-27.
The Huskies will advance to the second round of the conference tournament to play No. 5 seed Michigan tomorrow in Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The action will be aired on Big Ten Network with the Huskies and Wolverines tipping off 25 minutes after the conclusion of the 9 a.m. PT Oregon/Indiana game.
