Washington Fights To Finish Against TCU
March 23, 2026 | Women's Basketball
FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The Washington women's basketball team held TCU to its lowest first half score of the season, but fell 62-59 in overtime on Sunday at Schollmaier Arena.
Sayvia Sellers scored 18 points and Avery Howell finished in double figures for the fourth straight game with 14 points. Brynn McGaughy continues to impress as a true freshman, scoring 13 points, while Hannah Stines also scored 10 points.
Washington (22-10) held TCU (31-5) to just 19 points in the first two frames, with the Horned Frogs only scoring six points in the second quarter. TCU shot just 18.2% from the field and did not make a 3-pointer in the frame, while Washington scored 16 points to jump to a 27-19 lead at halftime. Sellers, Howell, and Stines all knocked down a 3-point shot in the quarter.
McGaughy added five points in the third quarter and delivered one of the biggest shots of the game in the final frame — hitting a tough shot in the paint over the 6-foot-7 defender to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Huskies continue to be very effective at limiting opponents from behind the 3-point line, with TCU recording both its lowest made 3-point field goals and 3-point field goal percentage on the season. The Horned Frogs finished 4-for-19 from behind the arc.
Howell led the team with eight rebounds, while Sellers collected six of her own. In addition to her 18 points, Sellers continued to create opportunities for her teammates, dishing out five assists.
Sunday was another chance to watch what has been a very special season for the Huskies, with Washington making its second consecutive trip to March Madness.
This campaign also marked the first 20-win season, highest winning percentage, and most wins inside Alaska Airlines Arena since that same season. There were a number of highlight victories throughout the past few months, including taking down No. 6 Michigan at home, upsetting No. 16 Maryland in double overtime, and beating Minnesota, the No. 9 ranked team in the NET.
For their accomplishments this season, a number of Huskies have been recognized with both conference and national honors. Beyond being recognized on the All-Big Ten First Team, Sellers was a member of the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Women's College Player of the Year Late-Season Team, and was recently recognized as a USBWA All-America finalist. Howell was named a USBWA Player of the Week and an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, while McGaughy was a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
