Dawgs Put Up Dawg Fight Vs. No. 7 LSU
November 25, 2024 | Women's Basketball
NASSAU, Bahamas – The Washington women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 Big Ten) came out hot against its first ranked opponent of the season, narrowly dropping their opening game in the Bahamas, 68-67 to No. 7 LSU.
Washington held a lead most of the way but a last second driving layup by LSU gave the Tigers (7-0, 0-0 SEC) their first lead of the second half, enough to secure a win.
The Huskies drop to 6-2, with another opportunity later this week as they will take on Southern (0-7) in the consolation game of the Pink Flamingo Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Wednesday's game will tip off at 8 a.m. PT at the Baha Mar Convention Center. The championship game between LSU and No. 20 NC State will begin at 10:30 a.m. PT.
The Tigers entered today's game averaging 94 points per game. The Huskies held them to 68 Monday.
The Huskies held LSU to its lowest three-point shooting percentage of the season, as the Tigers connected on just 3-of-19 triples (15.8 percent) while not making a three in the first and fourth quarters entirely.
UW held the Tigers to their lowest point total in a quarter so far this season (11), jumping out to a hot start and taking a 24-11 first quarter lead.
The Huskies held the Tigers to 29.4 percent shooting in that opening frame (5-for-17) and 0-for-5 from behind the arc, the first time this season the Tigers have been down after one.
Sayvia Sellers led the Dawgs' offensive charge, notching a career-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting and a career-high-tying four three-pointers. She also added four rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Elle Ladine and Hannah Stines also reached double digits for the Huskies, who shot 44.1 percent from the field and connected on eight triples.
Ladine added 14 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high four steals in 36 minutes of action.
Stines reached double figures for the third time this year, playing all 40 minutes, giving the Dawgs 12 points along with five rebounds and five assists.
The Dawgs held a 10-point lead at halftime, up 36-26 with five players with five or more points.
Tayra Eke added a little bit of everything for Washington, putting up eight points, seven rebounds – including five on the offensive glass -- three blocks, two steals, and an assist.
