February 19, 2023 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – The Washington women's basketball team (15-11, 7-9) got a big 68-60 win over Oregon (14-13, 5-11) Sunday afternoon in Alaska Airlines Arena to split the series with the Ducks.
An energetic crowd saw the Huskies secure their first win over Oregon since 2016, and the first win at home since 2015.
"I thought we did a great job of locking in and making it difficult for them, so it was a great battle by both programs," head coach Tina Langley said.
On Senior Day, Washington honored its six outstanding seniors Lexi Griggsby, Emma Grothaus, Trinity Oliver, Darcy Rees, Haley Van Dyke, and TT Watkins.
"These six seniors have meant so much to this university and this program," Langley said. "I know our fans absolutely adore them. Our team loves them beyond words. They've been incredibly special and continue to be. It's been a day of celebration of who they are – it's a really special group of people. I said this in the locker room, I'm really grateful for them and I know our team is, too."
Senior Haley Van Dyke put up nine points and led the team with nine rebounds. Fittingly, on Senior Day, Van Dyke recorded career steal No. 200.
"It's exciting that I still get the opportunity to be out here with my teammates, in front of all the amazing fans we have, and in front of my family," Van Dyke said. "I think we all just had a lot of fun together today."
In a total team effort, every Husky who played Sunday afternoon scored.
Lauren Schwartz led the team in scoring with 13 points, and Dalayah Daniels was the other Husky in double digits with 10. In the second quarter, Daniels recorded her second block, which brought her total to 34 on the season to tie for 10th in the UW Top 10 season blocked shots leaderboard.
Senior Darcy Rees, whose parents flew all the way from Australia to watch her play at home one more time, had a solid game, recording eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
"It's been a great experience," Rees said. "We have a great group of girls and support that can carry us through no matter what. Today was just a great way to celebrate all of that and come together and take this moment to appreciate what we have and the people around us."
The Washington defense forced 15 turnovers on an Oregon squad who had only been averaging a little over 12 per game, and the Huskies out-rebounded the Ducks 33-29. In the fourth quarter, UW went up by as many as 14 to solidify the win.
"It makes you want to immediately say 'thank you' to our fans, because they have just been tremendous for us as we continue to climb and get better and work toward being the best team we can be," Langley said. "They've been along every step of the way. They've really helped lift us this season to get some home wins – every one of them."
Up next for the Huskies, Washington heads to Los Angeles for the regular season finale at No. 25 USC on Thursday, Feb. 23 and No. 16 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 25.
