
Washington to Host Husky Classic

SEATTLE -- The Washington women's basketball team (8-1) hosts Liberty and SIUE at its annual tournament, the Husky Classic, taking place in Alaska Airlines Arena. First up is a game vs. Liberty (4-5) in the second meeting all-time between the programs. The game tips off Sunday at 12:00 p.m. PT and will be aired on the Washington Live Stream (GoHuskies.com/Live) with Jason Dorow on the call. Gary Hill will call the action on 1090 KPTR-AM.
Last Time Out
Washington opened Pac-12 play with a big 82-66 win over Washington State at Alaska Airlines Arena last Sunday in the first round of the Boeing Apple Cup Series, snapping WSU's 5-game series win streak. The last time UW won the matchup was 12/29/19 in Pullman. At home, the last series win for UW was 1/21/18. The 8-1 start to the season is the best nine-game start to Washington's season since 2016-17, when the Huskies also started 8-1 and went on to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Washington shot 54% from the field - the best all season. Coming into the game, WSU had only allowed opponents 36%. The 66 points scored by WSU was below their average 75.1 points per game, thanks to the Husky defense. Five Huskies scored in double digits: Lauren Schwartz (21 points), Jayda Noble (14), Dalayah Daniels (12), Trinity Oliver (12), and Haley Van Dyke (10). Schwartz's 21 points was not only a season high, but also her highest scoring game as a Husky. Schwartz went 3-3 from three in the first half, and finished with a career-high five made three-pointers (5-6). Noble's 14 points was a new career high. She also recorded seven rebounds. Daniels recorded her seventh career double-double (and third as a Husky) with 10 rebounds to go with her 12 points. Van Dyke also recorded six rebounds and tied her season high steals with three.

The Huskies are No. 2 in the conference and No. 17 nationally in offensive rebounds per game (16.8), and No. 3 in the conference and No. 20 nationally in rebounds per game (44.4). Washington is No. 4 in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (56.6). Washington is No. 4 in the conference and No. 34 nationally in field goal percentage defense (35.3). Dalayah Daniels is No. 5 in the Pac-12 in both blocks (13) and blocks per game (1.44). Daniels is No. 11 in the conference in rebounds per game (6.8). Jayda Noble is No. 4 in the Pac-12 in steals per game (2.29).

Washington returns eight Huskies from last season with Lauren Schwartz, Jayda Noble, Haley Van Dyke, Nia Lowery, TT Watkins, Trinity Oliver, Lexi Griggsby, and Darcy Rees. Fans will see six new faces on the team this season, as the Huskies welcomed four freshmen from California - Hannah Stines, Teagan Brown, Shayla Gillmer, and Elle Ladine - and two transfers, Dalayah Daniels (Cal) and Emma Grothaus (Lehigh).
Preseason Nods
Van Dyke earned Preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention recognition, and Grothaus was one of 20 players named to the 2023 Lisa Lisa Award Watch List.
