November 07, 2019 | Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – Washington completed the season sweep over rival Oregon tonight at Matthew Knight Arena, getting a 25-19, 26-24, 25-20 victory behind 17 kills from senior Kara Bajema. The Huskies (18-5, 9-4 Pac-12) stayed in a tie for second in the conference race and earned their sixth-straight win over the Ducks in Eugene.
Bajema hit .333 with 17 kills on 42 swings to lead the attack and she also went all the way from 11th to a tie for 8th on the Husky career kills list tonight, as she passed All-Americans Makare Desilets (1,240), Kindra Carlson (1,251), and tied Kristina Laffling with 1,253 career kills.
Also moving up on the top-10 lists was senior Shayne McPherson who had 12 digs tonight, giving her 1,546 to move ahead of former Pac-12 Libero of the Year Cassie Strickland for fourth all-time.
And breaking into the top-10 career list as just a sophomore was Ella May Powell, as she had 30 assists tonight to get into the No. 10 spot in the UW recordbooks with 2,230 career assists. Powell set the Huskies to a .288 attack percentage while the Ducks hit .206.
Washington came up with clutch serving tonight, posting eight aces, with a big one from Bajema at 25-24 to win the second set. Then Maria Bogomolova served three consecutive aces to break an 11-11 tie in the third set and give the Huskies a 16-11 lead before her serving run was done. She finished with four of UW's eight aces.
"(Sets) were tight for longer than we wanted them to be, and I thought we had some great serving down the stretch," said Head Coach Keegan Cook. "Of course Maria's run in the third stands out to really break things open, but had to execute late and we were able to do that."
Sophomore Shannon Crenshaw put away eight kills and hit .300 while adding seven digs, and junior Samantha Drechsel had 10 kills and three block assists. Junior Lauren Sanders had five kills, hitting .455, with three blocks, all in the third set.
UW also got a lift from Claire Hoffman, who returned to action after missing the past six matches with an injury, checking in for the first time in the third set and picking up three kills on four swings to help the Huskies close things out.
"Claire is cleared to go and I have a lot of confidence in her in any situation, and she had her chance today and came in and made an impact right away with some good passes, couple nice swings, it was nice to see her out there. Shannon Crenshaw had a great match as well, and now we have two good options there," said Cook.
