Huskies Handle Terps In Straight Sets
November 26, 2025 | Volleyball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. โ Husky Volleyball stayed hungry tonight, following up Saturday's Senior Night sweep of UCLA with a road sweep all the way across the country at Maryland. Washington (13-16, 8-11 Big Ten) used late surges at the end of all three sets to beat the Terrapins (8-21, 1-18 Big Ten) by a 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 line at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
ย
UW earned consecutive wins for the first time since Oct. 12 and Oct. 17 against Oregon and Penn State, and consecutive sweeps for the first time since mid-September when the Huskies swept three in a row over Stony Brook, Northern Iowa, and Arizona.
ย
All three sets were close until the Huskies made crunch time runs. In the first set, UW was down 17-18 but then had a 6-1 run for 23-19 and finished it off from there. Set two was also tied at 17-17 but the Dawgs then scored seven unanswered, and closed it out on their second set point chance. Trailing 14-16 in set three, the Huskies took timeout and went on a 7-1 run for a 21-17 lead. After Maryland got one point back, the Huskies finished off the sweep with the final four points in a row, all told scoring 11 of the final 13 points.
ย
Washington's offense feasted a day before Thanksgiving, hitting .380 for the match as sophomore setter Alexis Haury dished out 32 assists. Haury also had a career-high five kills in a variety of ways, on five attempts to hit 1.000 and she also had 11 digs for a double-double.
ย
The most frequent recipient of those assists was freshman Simona Mateska, who hit .367 with a team-leading 16 kills. Mateska became the first Husky freshman since current UW assistant coach Krista (Vansant) Hendrickson to surpass 300 kills.
ย
Kierstyn Barton and Alexa Markley were equally on target on the pins. Barton had 11 kills and hit .409, while Markley had 11 kills and hit .391. Barton also had three aces while Markley had two blocks.
ย
Elise Hani had five kills and a team best four blocks. Sophomore Julia Hunt returned to action for the first time since Oct. 18 due to a foot injury, and she picked up one kill, one block and a service ace.
ย
Zoria Heard had 10 digs and a big eight assists.
ย
Up Next: The Huskies stay out east for Thanksgiving tomorrow, and finish the season on Friday, Nov. 28, with their first ever visit to Rutgers. That match will start at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
