Huskies Sweep Aside Bruins On Senior Night
November 22, 2025 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Nothing like a Senior Night sweep to leave a lasting impression. Washington Volleyball closed out its home schedule tonight with one of its best matches of the season in front of 4,140 fans, downing UCLA in straight sets. Seniors Elise Hani, Zoria Heard, Taylor Simpson, and Alexa Markley all took the Alaska Airlines Arena floor for the final time in the 25-17, 27-25, 25-18 victory.
The Dawgs (12-16, 7-11 Big Ten) picked up their first win over the Bruins (16-12, 10-8 Big Ten) since the 2022 season. The key stretch was a second set rally by the Dawgs from down 11-17 and 17-21, saving two UCLA set points in the process then winning with a Katy Wessels block on their first chance to take the 2-0 lead.
Two nights ago the Dawgs had a 2-0 lead but let Michigan rally back to take a five set win. Tonight the Dawgs only raised their level after going up 2-0, and slammed the door with a dominant third set.
"I was just proud of our group," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel. "Yesterday we watched film from the Michigan match and we saw plays towards the end where we didn't go for it as much as we were early in the match. We said hey let's make sure we are ready to be the aggressor and go for it.
"The other thing we talked about going into today was senior day. All our seniors have had different journeys or been here for different lengths of time, but we wanted to play hard for them so that they could have their final home memory be a great one. We focused on that today, playing hard for those women. And what a great environment it was tonight. It was awesome to see our community out so strong and our students come to cheer on our team. I love that Elise, who's been here the longest, got the final point."
Hani did indeed close out the match with a kill, as she had five tonight to go with three blocks. Heard was outstanding in the back row and in serve-receive, as she led all players with 17 digs and she had a pair of aces. Markley had nine kills, hitting .261 with two blocks and six digs. Simpson also subbed in during the second set when UW needed a spark.
Supporting the seniors in a big way was freshman Simona Mateska, who led with 13 kills and had three aces in a big first set run. Junior Kierstyn Barton hit .355 with 12 kills and just one error, adding eight digs, one ace and two blocks. Sophomore Alexis Haury had 31 assists and nine digs, two kills and two aces. Junior Katy Wessels tallied five blocks and three kills.
Up Next: The Huskies finish the season next week with one last, very long road trip. UW is at Maryland this coming Wednesday, Nov. 26 and then heads to Rutgers the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.
