
Dawgs Outlast โCats Behind Sharp Offense

EVANSTON, Ill. โ Washington Volleyball showed some grit in a persevering five-set victory today over Northwestern in its first visit to Evanston, Ill. and the Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Huskies got back into the win column to snap a four-match skid, outlasting the Wildcats, 25-12, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11.

Washington (11-15, 6-10) hit .333 or better in four of the five sets today, and dominated the attack percentage for the match overall, hitting .346 compared to .195 for Northwestern, yet the match still came right down to the wire in the final set. The Huskies were trailing, 8-10, in set five, but scored seven of the final eight points to secure the road win.

The Huskies finished with more kills (65-53) and digs (55-47) and the teams were even in blocks with 11 per side. Northwestern had 7 aces to the 6 of UW.

Sharing the team lead with 17 kills apiece were junior Kierstyn Barton and freshman Simona Mateska. Barton added a team-high 12 digs for a double-double, plus two aces, including a key one that tied set five at 10-10. Mateska hit .378 for the match, adding seven digs and three blocks.

Senior Alexa Markley had a great match today with 14 kills on a .423 attack percentage, adding 1 ace, two blocks, and 11 digs for a double-double.

Alexis Haury dished 48 assists and had nine digs and two aces. Katy Wessels had eight kills, hitting .333, with seven block assists. Elise Hani hit .429 with five kills and four blocks. Freshman Maija Howse also added four kills on nine swings without an error to hit .444.

Up Next: Washington heads home for the final time this season, hosting Michigan on Thursday night, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. Then the Dawgs host UCLA on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the home finale, which will be Senior Night for four Huskies.
