SEATTLE - The second swing through the Pac-12 continues this week as the 14th-ranked Huskies (17-5, 8-4 Pac-12) head down to Oregon for a Thursday-Sunday schedule against Oregon and Oregon State. Both Oregon schools are in need of wins to keep their postseason hopes alive and Washington also covets the matches to stay in the Pac-12 title chase and boost its tournament resume. Thursday night at 8 p.m. the Huskies will face the Ducks in Matthew Knight Arena, then it's on to Corvallis for a rematch with the Beavers on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 12 noon. Both matches will be televised nationally on Pac-12 Networks.
Washington went 1-1 last week against the L.A. schools, letting one get away last Friday against USC in a five set loss but then rebounding to sweep No. 25 UCLA with a .375 attack percentage that was UW's best since the first meeting with Oregon State on Oct. 11. All four of Washington's conference defeats have come in the first of the week's two matches, but all four times the Huskies have come back to win the second match. The Dawgs will look to grab the opener and the encore this week on the road.
The Huskies are No. 7 in the national RPI this week, and were seeded No. 7 this past weekend when the NCAA released its current top-10 seeds, a month out from the NCAA selection show.
Oregon is 3-9 in Pac-12 play but just picked up one of its biggest wins with a 3-1 road victory over Cal last week. Ronika Stone had 17 kills and hit .556 against hte Bears and Abby Hansen hit .571 with 13 kills. But Oregon then dropped a straight set match at Stanford two days later. In league play, Oregon is hitting .190 and opponents are hitting .231 but UO is one of the toughest serving teams with 1.42 aces per set. Sophomore Brooke Nuneviller leads in both kills and digs with 3.10 kills per set and 3.85 digs per set while Stone has 2.77 kills per set and hits .266. Senior Willow Johnson has posted 2.96 kills per set, hitting .235. The Huskies won the first meeting in Seattle in five sets, rallying out of an 0-2 deficit.
The Beavers lost both matches in the Bay Area, their last win coming at Arizona on Oct. 25. Oregon State is now 9-14 and 3-9 in league play. In Pac-12 play the Beavers have given up a .280 attack percentage to opponents while hitting .177. Senior Amy Underdown ranks third in the Pac-12 in aces with 0.33 per set and junior Grace Massey is fifth in digs with 4.02. Haylie Bennett and Maddie Goings are nearly equal on kills for the season. Goings averages 2.78 per set on the year and Bennett has 2.71. In OSU's last match at Cal, Bennett had 14 kills and hit .367. The Huskies won the first meeting in Seattle this year in straight sets.
