SEATTLE - The fourteenth and final week of the NCAA Volleyball regular season has arrived, and No. 9 Washington has two more big home matches on tap to prepare it for the postseason. The Huskies will also be honoring four incredible seniors on Saturday before the rivalry match against Washington State. First up, however, is the first and only meeting of the season against California, this Wednesday evening at 4 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies (23-5, 14-4 Pac-12) have won seven in a row and look to keep their momentum going into the NCAA tourney against the Bears and Cougars. Washington is alone in second-place in the Pac-12, two games behind first-place Stanford and two games ahead of third-place Utah. Stanford has clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title and can clinch outright on Tuesday night against WSU in Pullman. Should Washington State win that match, UW will still have a chance to tie Stanford with two wins this week and another loss by Stanford vs. Cal. But wins for the Huskies also guarantees a second-place conference finish and would potentially mean a Top-10 NCAA seeding.
Prior to Saturday's 5 p.m. first serve against WSU, the Huskies will honor the 2019 Senior Class of Kara Bajema, Shayne McPherson, Avie Niece, and Cailin Onosko. All four have been cornerstones of the roster for the past four seasons, helping UW to a Pac-12 title as freshmen, and to the NCAA tournament every year, and all four are playing their best volleyball as seniors. Bajema now ranks sixth in UW history in career kills with 1,353 and this week set a school record with her fifth Pac-12 Player of the Week award of the season. Niece ranks 8th all-time with 449 total blocks and just recorded her 500th career kill. McPherson last week broke the Washington career record for total sets played. With 471, she has now played in more sets than any Husky in history. Her 1,613 digs are fourth-most in school history. Onosko this season has also played the most integral role of her career, appearing in nearly every set and averaging a career-high 1.19 digs per set with 27 assists and helping in serve-receive.
Last week the Huskies made their final regular season road trip and picked up two four set wins over the Arizona schools. Bajema won her ifth Player of the Week honor after posting 22 kills in both wins, and Ella May Powell had 101 assists and set the Huskies to above a .300 attack percentage in each match. Samantha Drechsel also had 28 kills on the week and has reached double-figures in 16 straight matches.
During the current seven-match win streak, the Huskies are hitting .309 and holding opponents to a .191 mark. Ella May Powell is averaging 11.65 assists per set, a large chunk going to Kara Bajema and Samantha Drechsel. Bajema is averaging 4.92 kills per set during the win streak, hitting .347. Drechsel is adding 3.54 kills per set on a .304 percentage. Avie Niece is posting 1.38 blocks per set and hitting .330 while Lauren Sanders is averaging 1.15 blocks and hitting .340.
The Huskies meet Cal for the first time on Wednesday. The Bears have had a strong season and been ranked in the top-25 for much of it before just falling out this week. Cal is now 20-8 and 10-8 in league play. Mima Mirkovic leads the team with 3.34 kills per set but she has missed the past three matches. Maddie Haynes and Bailee Huizenga have led the attack in her absense and middle blocker Preslie Anderson is hitting .401 on the year and .354 in Pac-12 play to rank among the conference leaders. Cal is fourth in Pac-12 play with a .256 attack percentage and eighth in opponent attack percentage at .241.
The Cougars are in fourth-place in the Pac-12 with an 11-7 record and are 22-8 overall but rank just 56th in the RPI this week so WSU will be fighting hard for the upset. Washington needs some revenge after dropping the Pac-12 opener to the Cougars in Pullman in four sets. Washington State has several standout freshmen as Pia Timmer leads the team in Pac-12 matches with 3.01 kills per set. Freshman middle Magda Jehlarova is first in the Pac-12 in attack percentage at .362 and senior middle Jocelyn Urias is seventh with a .324 percentage. Jehlarova also is second in blocks per set with 1.38. Freshman setter Hannah Pukis is fifth in the Pac-12 with 10.01 assists per set. Senior libero Alexis Dirige ranks second in digs per set with 4.45.
