SEATTLE – Husky volleyball returned home for just the second time all season, and earned its first straight set sweep since the prior home match, rolling to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 win over Oregon State. The Huskies (12-3, 3-2 Pac-12) hit a stellar .429 tonight with a balanced attack in front of 2,413 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Washington played 13 of its first 14 matches away from home, the only home match being a 3-0 win over then-No. 9 Wisconsin back on Sept. 21. Tonight was the first of four straight Pac-12 matches for the Dawgs, and after a slow start in the first set Washington settled in to the comforts of home and put away the Beavers (8-8, 2-3 Pac-12).
"It feels good to be home," said Head Coach Keegan Cook. "It was great to have some practices this week as well as some extra rest after all the travel. I think it served us well, especially on offense, I felt like the hitters were in a good rhythm. Certainly we got our block a little better than it was against UCLA. Happy to be home for a lot of reasons."
Washington had 44 kills compared to 35 for OSU and had seven service aces compared to two for the Beavers, while doubling up Oregon State in blocks, 10 to 5.
Cook credited Washington's passing and the setting of Ella May Powell for the impressive attacking numbers.
"Whenever you have offensive nights like this you're looking at your serve-receive and you're looking at your setter, and both were really good," said Cook. "For the most part serve-receive was really stable, and Ella May ran the offense according to the game plan. We've seen it before at times, and we've talked about it at practice: Are we going to be the team that hits for a high efficiency and plays clean? Or do we get a little impatient and make some hitting errors, and tonight we didn't make many errors."
Powell had 36 assists and also led the team with nine digs and added three blocks. Senior Kara Bajema had 12 kills on a .370 attack percentage, junior Samantha Drechsel had 11 kills and hit .476, and sophomore Claire Hoffman returned to the lineup after missing the UCLA match and hit .562 with 10 kills and just one error on 16 swings.
Both middle blockers hit over .400, as Lauren Sanders had four kills and six blocks and hit .429, and Avie Niece hit .444 with six kills and four blocks. Maria Bogomolova had three aces tonight for the second straight match.
The turning point was the first set, when the Huskies were down 6-11 but then went on a 13-3 run including a 7-0 run on Shayne McPherson's serve where she served two aces and Sanders had three blocks.
UP NEXT: Washington takes on a tough Oregon squad this Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks. Sunday's match will be Three Stripe Sunday, celebrating UW's partnership with adidas and including a number of giveaways.
SET 1: A kill from Avie Niece got the Huskies started and Samantha Drechsel finished her first kill to make it 4-4. Claire Hoffman had a kill out of the back row to make it 5-6 Beavers. But Oregon State then won four straight points to double up the Huskies and force a UW timeout. Bajema had a back row kill out of the break to snap the skid. Hoffman and Niece had consecutive kills as the Huskies pulled back within a pair at 9-11. Down 12-14, McPherson got the Huskies started with an ace and then Sanders and Bajema pulled the Huskies even with a block, and Sanders and Drechsel ended the next point with another stuff for a 15-14 lead. After an Oregon State setting error, the Beavers took timeout at 16-14. McPherson kept serving, and assisted on a Bajema kill, and then she served another ace to make it 18-14. Sanders and Drechsel capped the 7-0 run with another block. The teams then traded sideouts with kills from Drechsel, Bajema, and Sanders. Powell aced the Beavers to get to set point at 24-18. On their second chance, Powell set a quick to Niece who pounded it for the 25-19 win.
Both teams hit .345 in the first set but the Huskies got the edge thanks to a 3-1 aces advantage while OSU missed four serves and the Huskies missed just one. Drechsel had four kills and Bajema had three on seven swings while Niece had three on four.
SET 2: Niece finished a quick from Powell to start things in the second set, and after a Sanders kill made it 3-2, the Beavers took an early timeout. Powell set Bajema on the pipe again for a kill for 5-4. Niece and Drechsel teamed up for a big block and then Niece put away a Beavers overpass for a 9-6 lead. Sanders and Powell roofed one for 12-9, and then they teamed up for another block to push the lead to four at 14-10, followed by an ace from Bajema and a Sanders slide kill for 16-10. The Husky block continued to break things open, as Powell and Niece teamed for one and then Niece had a solo block for 20-11. Sophomore Marin Grote subbed in and Powell connected with her for a kill for 22-14 Dawgs. Powell set Drechsel for another kill to reach set point, and Bajema finished it off by slamming off the block and out for 25-16.
The Huskies hit a scorching .483 in the second set while the Beavers hit .200 with six of OSU's seven errors coming on Husky blocks. Sanders and Niece had three blocks apiece in the set and Hoffman killed four of six swings.
SET 3: Hoffman had a right side kill for 1-1 in the third. Drechsel bumped one crosscourt for a Bajema kill and a 4-2 lead. The Beavers pushed ahead by one but Hoffman tied it again at 7-7 with a tool of the block. Powell saved an OSU tip and then Hoffman got off the block again to make it 9-7 Dawgs. Bogomolova racked up two-straight aces to make it a 5-0 Husky run and OSU called timeout at 11-7. OSU made two more errors out of the break for 13-7 Dawgs before a Husky net error ended the 7-0 Husky run. Bajema struck from the back row and then Hoffman tipped to open space for 15-10. McPherson dug one that was drifting out long but Bajema sprawled out and somehow punched it up and after UW sent it over, the Beavers missed wide for 16-10 Dawgs. Drechsel then pounded one off the block for 17-10 and the Beavers used their final timeout. Niece crushed a quick set for 19-12 and shortly after, Drechsel crushed her 10th kill to make it 22-13 Dawgs. Another rocket from Drechsel on the right side got UW to match point at 24-15, and Bajema tipped over the block to cap it off, 25-16.
The Huskies had 16 kills on 26 swings with just four errors in the third set to hit .462 and held OSU to a .037 mark. Drechsel put down five of her six attempts without a miss for a .833 percentage and Bajema also had five kills with 12 assists by Powell.
