SEATTLE – A balanced attack led by the 12 kills from sophomore Tia Scambray powered the fourth-ranked Husky volleyball team to a straight set win over OregonState tonight at Alaska Airlines Arena. Six Husky attackers had five or more kills, as Washington (16-1, 6-1 Pac-12) finished with 20 more kills than the Beavers (4-13, 2-5 Pac-12) and closed strong in all three sets for the 25-13, 25-22, 25-20 victory.
With the win, the Huskies tied a program record with 24 consecutive Pac-12 home victories dating back to the first win of 2013. The run equals a mark set over the 2004-07 seasons.
Scambray led the Dawgs in kills tonight for the first time since the second match of the season against BoiseState. She had 12 kills on 21 attempts with four errors for a .381 attack percentage, helping the Huskies hit .295 as a team while Oregon State was held to just .034 for the match. Scambray also added a pair of aces and had seven digs.
Senior libero Cassie Strickland had 15 digs to anchor the defense, while senior Lianna Sybeldon, the reigning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, had seven kills on a .500 attack percentage and added five block assists. Sophomore Carly DeHoog added six kills, sophomore Crissy Jones had six, senior Melanie Wade had five, and freshman Destiny Julye also put down five. Fittingly in the balanced attack, setters Bailey Tanner and Katy Beals each finished with 17 assists.

“Tia had a strong night tonight,” said Head Coach Keegan Cook, “But I still think that we could side out at a higher level than we did tonight. Our offensive execution out of serve-receive was just a little below the standard we know we want to be at.”
The Huskies were able to keep OSU's All-American sophomore, Mary-Kate Marshall, in check, holding her to just four kills after she had 17 in OSU's three set win at Cal last week. “A big point of victory was our blocking on the outside and knowing that we had a good outside hitter coming into our gym, and the team's hard work played off,” Cook said.
The first Husky kill in set one came from Sybeldon on a tip to the center of the floor. A right side finish from Crissy Jones made it 3-2 Dawgs early. Katy Beals floated an ace off the defense for 4-2, but the Beavers came back with three points and an ace of their own to take a one-point lead, 4-5. Julye's first kill off the block put the Huskies back up, 6-5, and a tough Scambray ace led to a Beavers error and she then aced OSU one serve later to make it 9-5 and force a Beavers timeout. The Beavers snapped the five-point run out of the break but Wade put away her first kill for 10-6. Tanner set Scambray out of the back row and she got it down to keep the 13-8 cushion. Scambray followed that with another kill after a sprawling Jones dig. Jones and Sybeldon then teamed up for a stuff of OSU's Marshall for a 15-8 edge. A 3-0 run by OSU cut into the lead, but Scambray got a kill to snap that and then Strickland earned UW a free ball with a jump serve, and Wade converted in transition for 17-11. Strickland's serving earned the Dawgs a couple more points before OSU got her off the line. Scambray had two more kills, one set by Wade to get to 20-12. DeHoog banged down an overpass and then rolled one over and down on the right to get the Dawgs to set point at 24-13. A tough Scambray serve couldn't be controlled by the Beavers and the Huskies closed it out, 25-13, hitting .303 for the set while holding OSU to .034. Scambray had six kills on a .400 percentage in set one, and Strickland had six digs.
Scambray put a combo set from Beals down early in set two for an early 4-3 lead. A line drive ace from Wade put the Dawgs up 7-4. DeHoog had two more kills and then Sybeldon hung up to reject an offspeed try from the Beavs and OSU took timeout with the Dawgs up 9-5. The Beavers got two out of the break but UW answered back with a pair, Scambray killing an overdig for 11-7. The teams traded several sideouts, with Jones getting a crosscourt slice and Wade hitting a slide down off one foot for 16-12 Dawgs. OSU got within a point at 17-16, and UW subbed sophomore Courtney Schwan in for the first time since her injury at UCLA, but the Beavers picked up two more points to take the lead, 17-18, and force the Huskies into a timeout. Beals set DeHoog on the right out in serve-receive out of the break and she finished to tie it back up. Sybeldon then killed a OSU overpass for a 19-18 lead, and then Sybeldon and Julye threw up a roof to make it a 3-0 run and OSU took timeout at 20-18 Dawgs. The Beavers got back even at 21-all, but Jones crushed the next Tanner back set to regain the lead. Jones followed that with another transition kill off the block, and then Strickland's serve earned a free ball chance and Jones slammed another on the right for set point at 24-21. Strickland missed her serve, but on the next point, Schwan made her presence felt, sniffing out a dump attempt from the OSU setter, and blocking it back down to end the set, 25-22. Washington posted a .357 attack percentage in the second set, with Jones getting four kills on eight swings without a miss and DeHoog killing all three of her attempts.
Sybeldon smacked a kill off the block on the first point of set three, and then Scambray got the lion's share of a rejection for 2-0. Scambray kept rolling on the attack with two more left side kills as the teams were even through the first ten points. Schwan got her first kill on a net violation by the Beavers to put the Dawgs up, 8-7. Sybeldon hammered one down and a couple points later tipped over and down for an 11-8 Husky lead, but OSU ran off five straight points as UW struggled with its passing, the Beavers going on top, 11-13, before missing serve. OregonState got a kill on a Husky net violation to make it 12-15 Beavers at the media timeout. Sybeldon got a kill in serve-receive out of the break and then the Beavers swung long to get the Dawgs back within a point. A pair of Beaver miscues got the Huskies back even at 17-all, then Scambray dialed up an ace to put the Dawgs up, 18-17, and force the Beavers timeout. A blazing fast Husky transition play went from Scambray's dig, to Beals' set, and DeHoog finished on the right for 19-17. Sybeldon and DeHoog withstood a Marshall swing, sending it back down for 21-18. Julye got the Beals set on the next rally and blasted up the line for another point and OSU took timeout as the Dawgs were on a 7-1 run. OSU got the sideout but Julye answered with a kill. The Huskies reached set and match point at 24-20 and senior Justice Magraw checked in to serve. The Beavers sailed their swing out wide and the Dawgs walked off with the 25-20 win. The Huskies outhit the Beavers, .235 to .000 in the third set, with four kills coming from Sybeldon and three from Julye.
Washington will be back in action for another huge home match on Friday night, as 24th-ranked Oregon visits for an 8 p.m. start.
