SEATTLE – Annual leaders in home attendance in the Pac-12, the Husky volleyball team continues to protect its home court against its conference rivals. The fourth-ranked Dawgs swept 24th-ranked Oregon tonight in front of 3,068 fans to win a 25th straight Pac-12 home match, breaking a record set from 2004-07. Sophomore Carly DeHoog led UW in kills for the first time, putting down nine on 11 swings for an .818 attack percentage, as the well-rounded Huskies handled the Ducks, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.
Washington (17-1, 7-1 Pac-12) remains unbeaten at home this year with a 5-0 Pac-12 record in Alaska Airlines Arena, added to perfect 10-0 records in Pac-12 play at home over the last two seasons.
The Huskies hit .337 to raise their NCAA-leading attack percentage, which stood at .319 entering the night. Setters Katy Beals and Bailey Tanner spread the ball all around the court, with emphasis on the right side, as DeHoog equaled her career-high in kills in just three sets, and sophomore Crissy Jones also had seven kills, mostly at the right pin. Beals had 20 assists and seven digs, while Tanner had 19 assists, adding two aces, five digs, a kill and a block.
Head Coach Keegan Cook said “consistent” was the key word tonight. “Three sets of what looks like Washington volleyball in a lot of areas of the game. That's what we're hoping to see, so I'm very proud of the effort,” said Cook.
On the right side hitter success, “Carly and Crissy have put in a lot of work,” Cook said, “Crissy in the recent months and Carly last spring, so to see them getting rewarded for that is very fulfilling. We sided out at 74 percent which is probably the highest we have in the Pac-12. When you're siding out at that rate, you're giving yourself a chance to win a lot of matches.”
The Dawgs held the Ducks (9-7, 3-4 Pac-12) to a .160 attack percentage, just the third time Oregon was held under .200 for a match. UW had 43 kills to 36 for the Ducks, and held a 10.0 to 3.0 advantage in blocks, and a 44 to 39 edge in digs. Senior Melanie Wade had six blocks and senior libero Cassie Strickland had nine digs, but sophomore outside hitter Tia Scambray had the team-high in digs with 11, and had seven kills, three blocks and an ace, along with rock solid serve-receive all night.
Melanie Wade buried a slide for UW's first kill and a 2-1 lead in the opening set. DeHoog and Sybeldon earned the first stuff block for the Dawgs to make it 6-4. A line drive blast from Crissy Jones on the left went down for 7-6 Dawgs. Jones added another from the right off a Tanner back set for 8-all. A great pick-up of an Oregon block by Scambray led to a Ducks error as UW went up, 11-10. The teams kept going back and forth until a 5-0 Husky run built a 18-13 lead and Oregon took timeout. Julye tooled the block for a kill, and then Sybeldon got in on two straight blocks, one with Julye and another with Jones. Tanner added a service ace to cap the streak. Sybeldon obliterated a quick set for 19-14, and Jones kept the five-point lead with a right side kill in serve-receive. The Ducks closed to 20-17 with an ace that went off the top of the net and fell over, and UW took its first timeout. Jones quickly sided out for the Dawgs with her fourth kill out of the break for 21-17. Scambray and Wade teamed for a stuff, and then Courtney Schwan had a key dig up the line that set up Scambray for a kill and UO took its last timeout at 23-18. The Huskies reached set point after a Ducks service error, and on their second chance, Carly DeHoog spiked one off the defense and it went all the way up and hit the scoreboard to end the point in UW's favor, and close it out, 25-20. The Huskies outhit the Ducks, .308 to .111 in the frame, with 5.0 blocks to 1.0 for the Ducks, making up for a 10-15 deficit in kills.

DeHoog picked up where she left off in the first set with the first two kills of the second and a Julye blast from the left gave the Dawgs the early 4-1 lead. A Strickland dig let Tanner find Scambray in transition and she finished for 6-3. The Ducks rallied to tie things up at 7-7, but then missed a couple serves as UW pulled ahead by one and DeHoog then found an open spot for a kill and a 10-8 edge. Julye finished one in transition on the left, and then Wade put another away to make it a four-point Husky run and UO took timeout at 12-8 Dawgs. Oregon snapped the run with a kill, but DeHoog answered with a slam off a Beals backset. The Ducks put together a 3-0 run, victimizing UW with an ace between Strickland and Scambray, but then served into the net for 15-12. Julye had a huge right side crosscourt kill off a running set by Tanner for 16-13, and then Oregon finished the next rally swinging long for 17-13 and called their second timeout. The Ducks got a pair back, but UW won one of the longest rallies with a stuff by Sybeldon and Jones. Another big momentum rally was finished by Scambray off the block on the left after Kim Condie had a tremendous diving dig for 21-17, and DeHoog hit off the block in serve-receive for 22-18. But the Ducks got a service ace to trim the lead to 22-20 and the Huskies took timeout. Scambray had a perfect pass on the next UO serve, and Beals found Sybeldon who terminated for 23-20. Scambray had another perfect dig on the next rally and Jones put the ball down to get to set point. UW missed a serve, but on the next point, Sybeldon got the ball in serve-receive and banged it high off the block and out deep for the kill, ending it, 25-21. The Huskies hit .333 in set two, holding Oregon to .156. The Dawgs had 26 digs in the second set alone, seven from Scambray and six from Strickland. DeHoog killed five of her six swings and July also had five on eight to lead the offense.

The teams traded the first few points of the third set, with DeHoog and Sybeldon picking up early kills for the Dawgs and then Tanner floating an ace to the floor for 3-2. Strickland served the Huskies on the first run of the third set, as Jones had a tip kill, the Ducks had a setting error, and then Scambray put one down crosscourt in transition for 8-5. Scambray added another after a clutch Strickland dig, and then Wade and Tanner posted a stuff for a 10-6 lead. Condie had a diving dig and then Tanner got the left side kill set by Beals. Scambray dropped in an ace to push the lead to 12-7, and then Wade tipped over and down for 13-8. A missed connection by the Ducks forced them into a timeout at 14-8 Dawgs. Oregon picked up a couple to trim the UW lead, but DeHoog stopped that with another right side finish for 15-10. Oregon used another 3-0 run to get to 15-13, but Julye had a kill with a block touch, and then Scambray put one away from the left pin to push back to 17-13. Strickland bombed a jump serve ace for a 19-14 Husky lead. Wade and Scambray ended another hard-fought rally with a stuff in the middle of the net to make it 21-15 Dawgs, and then Wade pounded down a slide set from Beals for 22-16. Scambray racked up another sweet dig up the line and Schwan rolled in her first kill for 23-16, and Schwan and Wade then rejected another Ducks swing out of system off a tough Scambray serve to reach match point. Oregon couldn't get a good swing again on the next point, and DeHoog jumped in with a change-up kill to the middle to end it, 25-16. Washington picked its offense up to .367 in the final set, and three aces helped break it open. DeHoog killed all three attempts, with Scambray and Sybeldon also adding three kills apiece.
Washington heads back out on the road to wrap up the first half of conference play next week with a Wednesday showdown at sixth-ranked Stanford followed by a Friday match-up at California.
