SEATTLE – The Dempsey season has flown by and already is headed for its big finish this weekend, as Washington hosts the Husky Classic this Friday and Saturday. One of the premiere distance running meets in the country on an annual basis, UW looks to have multiple NCAA qualifiers coming out of this meet.
With the distance events driving the action in the Dempsey, Washington's sprinters, jumpers and vaulters will be chasing fast times and big marks in the thin air of Albuquerque at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. That meet will take place on Friday and Saturday as well at the ABQ Convention Center.
Start times in the Dempsey are 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday, with both field and track action beginning simultaneously.
The Husky Classic will be live streamed by RunnerSpace.com. General admission is $12 per day or $20 for the weekend. Flotrack will be streaming the action in New Mexico.
Key events to watch on Friday will be the Huskies running the women's invitational DMR at 6:05 p.m. in their first run at the event this season. The top heat of the men's 3k will be one to watch on Friday, at approximately 4:15 p.m., and the men's invite mile sections go at 6:35 p.m. as several sub-four Dawgs will try to drop more time and improve their NCAA prospects.
Saturday features an elite men's 5k invite section at 12:10 p.m. featuring Evan Jenkins. Chloe Thomas will be one of the top contenders in a loaded women's 5k invite at 1:50 p.m. Then the women's mid-distance crew will battle standout fields in the 3k invite at 2:10, the mile invite at 2:20, and the 800m invite at 2:28 p.m.
In the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings, the Husky men's team rose three spots to No. 14 this week, and the women rank No. 18 after dropping six spots while being idle last weekend.
