March 20, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Husky women's basketball team (19-14, 9-9 Big Ten) didn't go down without a fight all season long, and tonight proved no different.
Washington got off to a strong offensive start but fell to Columbia in First Four play of the NCAA Tournament, 63-60, Thursday night inside Carmichael Arena.
The trio of Sayvia Sellers, Dalayah Daniels, and Elle Ladine combined for 54 of Washington's 60 points Thursday, as the team connected on over 50 percent of its shots as it has multiple times this season. This was the 15th time the Dawgs shot over 50% from the field, connecting on 27-of-51 shots (52.9 percent).
Sellers recorded her 11th 20+ game of her sophomore campaign, pouring in a team-high 21 points (10-of-18), six assists, and three rebounds.
Daniels finished with a double-double which she already had by halftime, as the forward notched 17 points (8-of-11) and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the year.
Elle Ladine chipped in 16 points, six rebounds, and an assist, including two clutch triples in the fourth quarter to keep the Huskies within striking distance.
UW pushed the gas pedal early offensively, jumping out to a 21-10 lead after a quarter. The Huskies connected on 62.5 percent of their shots (10-of-16) while holding Columbia (24-6, 13-1 Ivy) to 5-of-15 and 0-for-9 from three-point range through 10 minutes.
Washington took its first double digit lead at 17-6 thanks to a Hannah Stines three-pointer from the right side late in the opening frame. The Huskies went on an 11-0 run to cap a quarter where Sellers, Ladine, and Daniels each finished with six points on the board.
Both teams struggled to get going offensively in the second quarter, with UW outscoring the Lions 13-11.
The script flipped slightly in the second half with Columbia winning the last 20 minutes, 42-26.
The Huskies outscored Columbia in the paint 46-26, led largely by Daniels down low.
Stay tuned over the next week for a recap of the 2024-25 Husky season.
