SEATTLE -- Winners of three straight, the Husky volleyball team has a stretch of major opportunities set to unfold in the coming weeks, starting at home this Wednesday night against 10th-ranked Oregon. The rematch with the Ducks is the first of at least four straight matches against Top-25 Big Ten opponents as the Huskies (16-4, 6-4 Big Ten) seek some statement wins. Wednesday's match with Oregon is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network with Elise Woodward and Husky legend Courtney Thompson on the call.
After the midweek match, the Huskies will travel down to Los Angeles to take on 21st-ranked USC this Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. inside the Galen Center. Looking beyond this week will see UW travel to 15th-ranked Minnesota and then host No. 2 Nebraska on Nov. 9. The challenging stretch is the best of what the new Big Ten has to offer for volleyball fans. The Huskies remain just outside the current AVCA coaches poll in the receiving votes category. UW is also now in a four-way tie for seventh in the league standings at 6-4, which includes USC, while Oregon is alone in fourth at 8-2.
The Dawgs are coming off two 3-1 wins over Rutgers and Maryland as UW improved to 6-1 at home this season, and 9-1 this year in four-set matches. The Huskies have seen different players step up to lead the attack all season long, and that trend continued this past weekend. Madi Endsley had a season-high 19 kills to lead the win over Rutgers, then Kierstyn Barton had a team-high 16 kills against Maryland, but one of the big stories was Sophia Tulino getting her first extended playing time with Emoni Bush missing her first match of the year, and Tulino came through with 9 kills while hitting .474.
Oregon is 16-3 and 8-2 in conference with one of those wins being a five-setter over the Dawgs just over two weeks ago in Eugene. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead, and then in the fifth set the Dawgs had a 10-5 edge before the Ducks rallied back to win, 15-12. Mimi Colyer led Oregon's comeback and had 25 kills overall, while Kierstyn Barton had 20 for UW and the Huskies outhit the Ducks overall for the match, .229 to .222. Colyer ranks seventh in the Big Ten with 4.03 kills per set. Onye Ofoegbu ranks 11th in the league with 1.24 blocks per set and hits .389 with 2.46 kills per set. Redshirt freshman Cristin Cline is fifth in the league with 10.48 assists per set.
USC is 14-6 on the year and 6-4 overall, coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Penn State and a 3-2 upset loss to Michigan State last week. For the season the Trojans are hitting .226 and holding opponents to .170. USC is one of the top blocking teams in the Big Ten with 2.97 per set for the year. Ally Batenhorst leads the team with 3.77 kills per set, and is an excellent blocking pin with 0.85 blocks per set. Leah Ford leads the blocking, with 1.42 per set, adding 1.47 kills per set and hitting .386. Tyrah Ariail also posts 1.28 blocks per set and 1.45 kills per set. Mia Tuaniga runs the offense with 9.90 assists per set and adds 2.08 digs per set and 0.36 aces per set and 0.69 blocks per set. USC won both matches with the Huskies last year but UW had won five in a row before that.
