Dawgs Dominate in 71-40 Husky Classic Win Over SIUE
December 20, 2022 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – The Washington women's basketball team (9-2) dominated in Tuesday afternoon's 71-40 win over SIUE (1-10) to close out the Husky Classic – and non-conference play – in Alaska Airlines Arena.
"I'm really proud of how we came out in this game," head coach Tina Langley said. "I think our preparation continues to improve, and I'm just really proud of the non-conference."
The Huskies were on top at the end of every quarter, and went on a 7-0 run, 10-0, 8-0, and another 8-0 run in each quarter, sparked by a solid defensive effort.
"Transition was a big factor today," said junior forward Lauren Schwartz.
The first points of the day came from a layup by Dalayah Daniels, who finished as the scoring leader with 15 points. Daniels also led with nine rebounds.
Jayda Noble and Schwartz were the other Huskies who scored in double digits in the win. Noble finished the day with 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Schwartz also finished with 11 points.
Haley Van Dyke had back-to-back successful steal-and-score opportunities in the second quarter, finishing with six points, six rebounds, two blocks, and a season-high five steals. The five steals contributed to 15 from UW on the day.
The Huskies had the 36-22 lead at halftime and never looked back.
The Huskies shot 48% - above their season average - and combined for 19 second-chance points.
It was a combined team effort, as Emma Grothaus also contributed six points and six rebounds, and freshman Elle Ladine added six points, five rebounds, and a team-leading five assists.
In the fourth quarter, freshman Teagan Brown sunk back-to-back threes, helping her tie her career high scoring of eight points on the day.
Washington was all over SIUE, out-rebounding the Cougars 50-30 and holding them to 25% shooting, well below their season average (33.7%).
"Our team is so deep and all of us are so athletic, senior forward Van Dyke said. "I think we can be really good on defense, and we're just scratching the surface."
This was the final non-conference game as the Huskies head into Pac-12 play.
"I love this group and I'm proud of the way they're working," Langley said. "I thought we showed great growth through this non-conference season."
Next Up: Washington is back at home Friday, Dec. 30 as Colorado comes to Alaska Airlines Arena.
