SEATTLE -- Six Husky seniors will take the floor at Alaska Airlines Arena for likely the final time on Wednesday, Nov. 23, as Washington hosts USC in its regular season home finale. In a pre-match ceremony before the 5:30 p.m. first serve, the Huskies will show their thanks for Dani Cole, Shannon Crenshaw, Marin Grote, Claire Hoffman, Sianna Houghton, and Ella May Powell. The accomplished class has helped win 111 matches over the past five seasons, with two matches left this week before a potential final NCAA tournament run.
Following the first and only meeting this season against the Trojans on Wednesday, the Huskies will travel to Pullman to close the regular season against Washington State on Friday in the second half of the Boeing Apple Cup Series. That match will take place at 6 p.m. in Bohler Gym. Both Wednesday and Friday matches will air on Pac-12 Networks. Sunday, Nov. 27, the NCAA tournament field will be announced live on ESPNU at 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
The Husky seniors have accomplished a staggering amount individually and led UW to incredible team achievements. Four Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights, and one Final Four. Two Pac-12 Championships. A combined six All-America honors. Powell is No. 16 in NCAA history, No. 3 in Pac-12 history and No. 2 in school history in career assists. She is the UW aces career leader, and sixth in career digs, with more than any non-libero. Hoffman is now sixth in school history in kills and fourth in aces. Grote has climbed to fourth in school history in career attack percentage. Crenshaw is one of 15 Huskies to reach 1,000 career digs. In total, the group has combined for 2,815 kills; 6,416 assists; 407 aces; 3,473 digs; and 874 blocks.
USC has had a strong season and is poised to make the NCAA tournament with an RPI of 26, which matches its AVCA ranking as USC is the first team "receiving votes". The Trojans are one game ahead of the Huskies in the Pac-12 at 12-6, and are 20-9 overall. USC had a 2-0 lead at Oregon in its last match, but the Ducks rallied to win in five sets. The Trojans are fifth in aces per set with 1.46, led by setter Mia Tuaniga who leads the Pac-12 with 0.48 aces per set, and ranks third with 11.14 assists per set. Gala Trubint is fifth in the league with 3.88 digs per set.Β
The Cougars have moved up to third in the Pac-12 with a 13-5 record, winning its last four in a row. WSU ranks fifth in league play with a .273 attack percentage, and has served strong, ranking second with 1.55 aces per set, plus a good block that is fourth with 2.49 blocks per set.
