SEATTLE -- With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the 12th-ranked Huskies hit the home stretch at home in Alaska Airlines Arena. Currently tied atop the Pac-12 with UCLA, Washington hosts Oregon State and 16th-ranked Oregon this weekend. Friday night's match with the Beavers will air on Pac-12 Networks Oregon and start at 7 p.m. Sunday's 2 p.m. battle with the Ducks will air live on Pac-12 Networks Washington.
Winners of 13 of their last 14 matches, the Huskies (20-4, 13-3 Pac-12) still have more work to do to get into position to potentially host NCAA first and second round matches as a top-16 seed, not to mention claim the conference championship for the second season in a row. Washington is 19th in the national RPI this week, coming off a 2-0 road trip to Stanford and Cal. Sunday, the Dawgs got to 20 wins for the 20th season in a row, reaching the mark even during the Covid-19 shortened 2020-21 spring season by virtue of making the Final Four. Marin Grote was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, her second win of the season.
Oregon State is 2-14 in league play this season, both wins coming against California. The Beavers have dealt with their share of injuries this season, but have several veteran talents to give opponents trouble. Maddie Goings leads the offense with 3.47 kills per set, but she missed OSU's two home matches last week. Kateryna Tkachenko and Mychael Vernon were the main options last week. Tkachenko is posting 3.14 kills per set. Izzi Szulczewski is eighth in the Pac-12 with 8.72 assists per set. Senior Grace Massey ranks fourth in the Pac at 4.22 digs per set. The Dawgs had a 3-0 win over the Beavers in the first meeting in Corvallis, and have won six in a row in the series.
The Ducks are coming off one of the their best wins, sweeping then-No. 12 UCLA in Eugene on Sunday to win their fifth in a row. Oregon is tied for third in the Pac-12, two games behind the Huskies and Bruins at 11-5. They will visit Washington State on Thursday before coming to Seattle. Oregon held UCLA to a .204 mark while hitting .304, led by 16 kills from Brooke Nuneviller and 9 kills on a .615 attack percentage from Karson Bacon. Bacon leads the Pac-12 with a .420 attack percentage, and Nuneviller is seventh in kills per set at 3.81. Gloria Mutiri adds 2.26 kills per set on a .270 percentage. Oregon leads the league with 15.89 digs per set, as Georgia Murphy is third individually with 4.33. The last two meetings between the Huskies and Ducks have been as dramatic as could be, with the teams trading reverse sweeps. Oregon came back from 0-2 down to upset the Huskies in five last spring, then UW rallied from 0-2 down in Eugene this season to win. The last four matches betwen the teams have all been in Eugene, as Oregon's last trip to Seattle was Oct. of 2019, another five setter that went to the Huskies.
