SERIES HISTORY VS. SBS OPPONENTS
β’ INDIANA: The two teams have only met once, on Feb. 21, 2014, with the Hoosiers winning that game, 8-2, in Surprise, Ariz. UW surrendered three runs in the first inning and could never catch back up. Current Major Leaguer Kyle Schwarber had a big game for Indiana, going 4 for 5 with 3 runs, 3 RBI a HR and a triple.
β’ COASTAL CAROLINA: The two programs met for the first time at the Conway Regional in a winner's bracket game on June 2, 2018. The Huskies beat the No. 20 Chanticleers, 11-6, and eventually went on to win the Regional. UW had a six-run second inning, capped by a Nick Kahle grand slam. UW added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with a Joe Wainhouse blast over the tall wall in centerfield the big blast. Β
β’ MINNESOTA: The Huskies and Golden Gophers have met nine times previously, with UW leading the series, 5-4. The teams met last season in the DQ Baseball Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium on March 3, 2018. The Huskies rallied from a 4-1 deficit and prevailed, 6-4, in 10 innings. Β Previously, the teams last met in 2009 at the Dairy Queen Classic that was held in the Metrodome. The Huskies rallied from a 5-0 deficit, but lost 6-5 on a bases loaded walk in the 10th inning. In 2003 the teams played twice at the Long Beach State Regional and the Huskies won both of those contests, 5-2 and 4-1, to eliminate the Gophers. The teams met in San Diego in 1998 (L, 15-9) and at Minnesota in 1997 (W, 9-1) as part of the Dairy Queen Classic. UW and Minnesota first met on the diamond at the San Jose State Classic in 1990. The team played three times that year with the Gophers winning 2 of 3 of the meetings.Β
NOTEWORTHY
β’ Players of the Week: The Huskies swept Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, marking the first time UW has done that since 2006. CF Braiden Ward was named Player of the Week after hitting .455 and stealing six bases in UW's sweep of Cal Poly, whle RHP Josh Burgmann was Pitcher of the Week after stiking out 10 in eight shutout innings on Sunday. The last Husky duo to sweep the awards were Tim Lincecum and Zach Clem (April 11, 2006).Β
β’ Win Streak: Washington's seven-game win streak is the longest since the Huskies won nine straight, April 26-May 16, 2014. They also won seven in a row and 10 in a row during that season.
β’ Jones Milestones: Junior Jordan Jones passed the 150 career strikeout plateau last week and needs 1.1 innings this week to reach 200 for his career. He is just outside of the Huskies top-10 lists in both categories, plus games started.
β’ Homer 'House: Dating back to 2018 but not including the two games UW played in the College World Series, senior Joe Wainhouse has hit a home run in 13-straight series. UW has won 10 of those series The last series he did not have a homer in was at USC, March 29-31, 2018.
β’ Iron Man Kahle: Nick Kahle has started 71 straight games, which is even more amazing considering his main position is catcher. He's made 68 of those starts at catcher, two in left field and one at designated hitter.
β’ Runs Galore: Washington's 25 runs scored against Northern Colorado on Feb. 20 were the most by the Huskies since they scored 26 on May 23, 2003 against USC (W, 26-3).
β’ Runs Galore Part II: UW is averaging 8.4 runs per game and is on pace to score 462 over a 55 game schedule, which would rank as the third highest total and average runs scored per game in UW history. For perspective, in Coach Lindsay Meggs' previous years, the highest average the Huskies had in a single season was 5.5 runs per game in 2010 and the highest total was 324 in 2014.
β’ 10K Runs: Josh Burgmann had at least 10 strikeouts in back-to-back games on March 3 (10 vs. Cal Poly) and Feb. 23 (11 vs. N. Colo). He is the first Husky to have consecutive 10-strikeout starts since Tyler Davis in 2015.
β’ Ward Man Of Steal: Through 10 games, Braiden Ward has stolen 11 bases. His average of 1.1 stolen bases per game put him well on pace to break the UW single-season record for steals. Chris Magruder had a school record 43 in 1997 over 66 games. Ward led the entire Pac-12 as a freshman with 19 stolen bases, which broke Magruder's UW freshman record of 17 stolen bases.
