Huskies Fall 1-0 To Indiana In Pitcher’s Duel
March 08, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Three Husky pitchers combined for an outstanding effort on Friday night in day one of the Seattle Baseball Showcase at T-Mobile Park, but it was one Indiana pitcher, Pauly Milto, that ruined the night and halted Washington's seven-game win streak. The senior right-hander allowed one hit – an eighth inning single – to lead the visiting Hoosiers (7-5) to a 1-0 shutout win.
David Rhodes (2-1), who was drafted in the 40th round by the Seattle Mariners, looked right at home in what could have been his future home had he signed a pro contract. The freshman faced the minimum through five innings, allowing a pair of singles, which were both wiped out by 6-4-3 double plays.
Rhodes got into his first jam in the sixth inning when he lost his command and issued his first two walks of the game. It proved costly when Drew Ashley laced a two-out single into left field that scored Cole Barr to break the ice and give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead that they would ultimately hang on to.
Rhodes exited the game after the sixth having thrown 83 pitches and allowing the one earned run on three hits. He struck out six and used his slider to record eight outs on ground balls.
Chris Micheles followed with 1 2/3 inning in which he struck out four and Stevie Emauels recorded the final four outs, striking out two.
But it was Milto (3-1) who shined the brightest under the setting of a Major League park. He held the Huskies hitless for 7 2/3 innings before surrendering a two-out, pinch-hit single to sophomore Noah Hsue. That would end up being the only hit he allowed as he ended his night striking out six, walking one and hitting a batter while throwing 104 pitches.
The Huskies would get the tying run on second in the ninth inning, but Matt Lloyd would get a strikeout to end the game and record his first save of the season.
Washington (8-3) returns to action Saturday night and will face 16th-ranked Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
