Three-Run Eighth Lifts No. 17 Coastal Carolina Past UW
March 09, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – In a re-match from the 2018 NCAA Conway Regional, 17th-ranked Coastal Carolina (13-3) broke open a 2-2 tie with three runs in the eighth inning to hand Washington (8-4) its second loss in as many days in the Seattle Baseball Showcase at T-Mobile Park on Saturday.
Jordan Jones pitched seven strong innings before running into trouble in the eighth. He had retired nine in a row until Cory Wood walked to lead off the eighth. It was Jones' first walk of the game and proved to be costly.
After an intentional walk to Zach Biermann, Jack Enger was handed the ball, but he couldn't keep the game tied as he was greeted by a single from catcher Kyle Skeels that sent Wood home and broke the 2-2 deadlock.
Kieton Rivers added to the lead with a bases-loaded double that scored two more runs to make the score 5-2.
Jones' (1-2) final line was six hits and four earned runs allowed. He equaled a season-high with eight strikeouts and threw 98 pitches.
The teams traded runs in the third inning to break the ice in the scoring column. The Chanticleers scored in their half of the inning when Wood followed Keaton Weisz's lead-off triple with a RBI groundout.
The Huskies answered back on Ben Baird's first collegiate home run. The junior took a 2-1 pitch from Austin Kitchen and deposited it into Edgar's Cantina beyond the left field fence.
Coastal Carolina re-took the lead in the fourth on a RBI ground out by Rivers. They held that lead until Washington re-tied things up in the fifth inning.
Nick Roberts started the rally with a lead-off single and eventually came around to score on a Braiden Ward single back up the middle.
From there, both starters settled in. Kitchen struck out four, including the side after giving up a Jonathan Schiffer single in the seventh. He ended up allowing five hits over seven innings and struck out seven to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Huskies brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Jay Causey got Roberts to ground out to end the game.
Washington wraps up the weekend against Minnesota on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. Both teams will be looking for their first victory of the weekend in the game that will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
