Offense, Burgmann Lift Huskies To Win Over Minnesota
March 10, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington (9-4) jumped out early and held on late to beat Minnesota (2-11), 7-5, Sunday night in the final game of the Seattle Baseball Showcase at T-Mobile Park.
Josh Burgmann, the defending Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week who entered Sunday's contest having allowed two runs in his first three appearances over a span of 20 innings, was staked to an early three-run lead after a big first inning from his teammates.
Braiden Ward got the home half of the first started with a single, stole second and was sacrificed to third. He scored when he beat the throw home from pitcher Joshua Culliver on a swinging bunt off the bat from Nick Kahle. The Huskies pieced together three-straight hits from Albert Hsiao, Mason Cerrillo and Ramon Bramasco – the last two driving in runs – to give Burgmann an early 3-0 advantage.
Washington would go on to add on single runs in four-consecutive innings to build a 7-1 advantage.
UW scored in the third on Minnesota's 10th error of the weekend and an inning later, Ben Baird continued his nice weekend by driving a ball into the left-center gap that got all the way to the wall for a RBI double that made the score 5-0.
The Huskies scored in the fifth on a wild pitch and again in the sixth, this time when Jonathan Schiffer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The offensive outburst proved to be plenty of run support for Burgmann to work comfortable. He ran into several jams throughout the game, but only allowed a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles. In all, the Golden Gophers had eight hits off the sophomore and also garnered two walks. He ended up with five strikeouts and threw 89 pitches.
Burgmann (3-0) handed the ball over to the bullpen after seven innings and things got dicey when Minnesota touched Stevie Emanuels for four runs in the eighth inning to cut what was a comfortable lead to a two-run UW advantage.
The Gophers would try to mount one last comeback and had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but Emanuels got Drew Hmielewski on a check-swing, strike three to end the game.
Cerrillo led the Husky offense with a 3-for-5 night, while Ward and Bramasco chipped in two hits each.
The Huskies begin Pac-12 play this weekend with a three-game series in Eugene, Ore., against the Oregon Ducks.
