Huskies Take Down No. 7 seed Michigan, Punch Ticket To Quarterfinals
May 21, 2026 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. – Washington dominated Michigan on Wednesday, securing a 7-1 victory to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Huskies improve to 25-31 on the season with the win.
Washington will face Oregon on Friday in the quarterfinal round and the beginning of the single elimination portion of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Huskies leaned on an outstanding performance from Jackson Thomas on the mound on Wednesday. The senior right hander cut up the Michigan batters with nine strikeouts, a career-high total.
He surrendered just one run in his outing while going six innings and getting out of multiple jams. In total, the Husky defense stranded 11 Michigan players on the bases.
Blake Wilson got the offense going in the second inning with a two-run home run to right field. The third baseman now has three home runs on the season.
Washington is now 19-9 when scoring before its opponent.
The Huskies added another run in the third thanks to a Sam DeCarlo RBI double.
Michigan pulled one back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, keeping the game within reach.
The Huskies began to pull away in the seventh, however, when Mic Paul delivered a two-RBI single up the middle. The two runs gave Washington some breathing room at a 5-1 advantage.
Jackson Hotchkiss delivered the dagger in the eighth. Immediately after a pitching change and on the second pitch of the at bat, Washington's left fielder drilled a 433-foot bomb out to center field.
Hotchkiss' homer landed in the gap between the outfield bleachers at Charles Schwab Stadium Omaha where only eight other players have hit a home run in the 15-year history of the stadium.
Hotchkiss moves up into a tie for No. 2 in the program record book for home runs in a season and he becomes just the third player in program history with 20 bombs in a year. He now trails only Chad Boudon (2003) who owns the record with 22.
Bryce Johnson came in to finish the game, entering with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, earning a strikeout to strand the runners. In his 2.1 innings, he took care of business, allowing just one runner from a walk.
He tactfully picked apart the Wolverines in the eighth and ninth innings, collecting three total strikeouts and his second save of the season.
The Huskies finished the day with seven hits, including two each for Sam DeCarlo and Blake Wilson. DeCarlo had two doubles on the day while Wilson had a double and a home run. Five of Washington's seven knocks were for extra bases.
The Husky hurlers fanned 13 total batters while walking just five and leaving 11 runners on the bases.
Washington returns to action in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament against Oregon. The two teams will meet on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. PT.
