May 19, 2026 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. – Washington secured its first-ever Big Ten Tournament victory on Tuesday night, taking down No. 6 seed Ohio State 8-6 in dramatic fashion.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 24-31 on the season and will now face No. 7 seed Michigan on Wednesday with a trip to the quarterfinal round on the line.
The two teams traded two-run blows all night long, but it was Washington who found the knockout punch in the top of the ninth. Mic Paul delivered a two-RBI triple down the right field line to put the Huskies in front for good.
Washington got on the board first in the third inning with two runs on two bases-loaded walks. The Huskies are now 17-9 when scoring before their opponent.
The Buckeyes responded in the bottom half of the frame, however, plating two to tie the game up.
In the fourth, Ethan Swidler drove in a run with an RBI single down the left line. Sam DeCarlo added to the tally, bringing home a run on a sacrifice fly to restore the two-run advantage.
Ohio State had an answer again, plating two in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game once more.
Casen Taggart took matters into his own hands in the sixth inning. The senior first baseman blasted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to deep right field.
His long ball went a towering 411 feet and again put the Huskies in front by two, 6-4.
Two innings later, the Buckeyes responded with two runs to knot the game up in the eighth.
In the ninth, Taggart drew a walk before Sam DeCarlo hustled to get on base, reaching on error. Then, Mic Paul popped up a 1-0 pitch behind the plate, but the Buckeyes catcher couldn't come down with the foul out, resulting in a dropped foul ball error and another chance for Paul.
The centerfielder didn't waste his opportunity. On the ensuing 1-1 pitch, Paul drilled the ball down the right field line, sending Taggart and DeCarlo rounding for home and putting the Huskies in front yet again by two.
Tommy Brandenburg came in in the bottom half of the frame. The senior forced a fly out and then struck out two batters to slam the door and seal the win.
Hayden Lewis turned in an impressive outing in the game. The Husky starter tossed 7.0 innings and 106 pitches, allowing four hits, four runs, three of which were earned, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Gunnar Nichols and Liam Lierman combined to pitch the eighth before Brandenburg finished the game off.
Ethan Swidler was responsible for three of Washington's six hits on the day and Mic Paul drove in three of the Huskies' eight runs to lead the team.
Washington is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT, facing No. 7 seed Michigan. The winner advances directly to the quarterfinal round on Friday while the loser will still have a chance to advance with a win on Thursday.
