March 13, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE -- The Washington Huskies (9-4) open Pac-12 play this weekend on the road against the Oregon Ducks (10-5). The Northwest rivals will play a three-games series starting Friday at 6:00 p.m. Game two is Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday's finale is slated to begin at noon.
All three of the games at PK Park will be live streamed on Oregon's Pac-12 live streaming platform (pac-12.com/live/university-oregon). Links to live stats can be found online at GoHuskies.com // Sports // Baseball // Schedule. Constant updates are also available via Twitter and Instagram: @UW_Baseball.
The Huskies have won their opening series in Pac-12 -play three-consecutive years -- all at Husky Ballpark -- including sweeps in both 2018 and 2017. Since 2000, UW has opened Pac-12 play on the road 12 times, winning the series only twice (2014 at ASU, 2007 at WSU).
UW needs two wins in Pac-12 play to reach 900 wins in Conference action all-time, dating back to 1916. They are attempting to join USC (1,155), Stanford (1,066), Washington State (1,026), Oregon State (1,024), UCLA (938) and California (912) as teams with 900 or more conference wins.
SERIES HISTORY VS. OREGON
Oregon leads the series 147-135-1. Oregon has won the last 3 series in Eugene, with UW's last series win there in 2011. UO won the first two games of the 2017 series in Eugene each by one run before UW answered back with a 12-3 win, buoyed by a Willie MacIver grand slam HR. The Huskies won 2 of 3 last year at Husky Ballpark. In the series clinching GM 3, Jordan Jones (5.1 IP) and Josh Burgmann (3.2) combined to shutout Oregon, 4-0. The Huskies have won each of the last four series in Seattle by a 2-1 margin. Under the direction of Lindsay Meggs and since 2010, the Huskies are 14-15 against the Ducks. The first meeting between the two squads was in 1910 and the Huskies defeated the Ducks 14-0. State Classic in 1990. The team played three times that year with the Gophers winning 2 of 3 of the meetings.ย
NOTEWORTHY
โข Been Caught Stealing, Once: The Huskies are 18-of-19 in stolen bases this season. The only caught stealing of the season was when Braiden Ward tried to steal home as part of a double steal on Feb. 23 in GM1 of a DH vs. Northern Colorado.
โข Oh, Canada: Not surprisingly since it's just over a 90 minute drive from Seattle to Canada, but two of three UW weekend starters hail from neighboring British Columbia. Freshman David Rhodes hails from White Rock, B.C., while Sunday starter Josh Burgmann is from Nanaimo, B.C. Additionally, midweek starter Jack DeCooman is from North Vancouver, B.C.
โข Nothing Extra About Rhodes: Freshman David Rhodes has had an outstanding start to his college career on the mound posting a 2-0 record with a 1.50 ERA in 18 innings. Interestingly, he has allowed 15 hits this season -- but none of them are extra-base hits. He is the only Pac-12 player that shows up in the stats with this anomaly.ย
โข March Has Ben Productive: Junior Ben Baird has been the Huskies' top hitter in March so far with a .357 average (5x14, 4 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI).
โข Micheles Going K-razy Junior Chris Micheles has been dominant out of the bullpen with 19 strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work. He has struck out at least two batters in each of his last six relief appearances.
โข Jones Milestones: Junior Jordan Jones has passed the 150 strikeout and 200 inning plateaus for his career. He is just outside of the Huskies top-10 lists in both categories. He is 49 K's away from becoming the sixth player in UW history to go 200/200 in both categories.
โข Iron Man Kahle: Nick Kahle has started 74 straight games, which is even more amazing considering his main position is catcher. He's made 71 of those starts at catcher, two in left field and one at designated hitter.
โข Homer 'House: Senior Joe Wainhouse had a stream of hitting a home run in 13-straight series snapped last week at T-Mobile Park.ย
โข Players of the Week: The Huskies swept Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on March 5, marking the first time UW has done that since 2006. CF Braiden Ward was named Player of the Week after hitting .455 and stealing six bases in UW's sweep of Cal Poly, while RHP Josh Burgmann was Pitcher of the Week after striking out 10 in eight shutout innings on Sunday. The last Husky duo to sweep the awards were Tim Lincecum and Zach Clem (April 11, 2006).ย
