SEATTLE - For the seventh time in the last eight seasons, the Huskies are one of the final sixteen teams still fighting for the national championship. This Friday and Saturday, the contenders will be whittled down to four, with Washington looking to earn one more trip on its long 2019 journey. To get a ticket to Pittsburgh and the Final Four, the Huskies must win twice in Waco, Texas, where top-ranked Baylor hosts the regional rounds.
All four seeded teams in the Baylor region held serve on the first week of the tournament. The eighth-seeded Huskies will take on No. 9 Kentucky, the SEC co-Champions, in the Round of 16 this Friday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time, 1:30 p.m. locally, streaming online on ESPN3. Prior to the UW-UK match, Baylor will face 16th-seed Purdue at 9 a.m. Pacific, 11 a.m. locally, on ESPNU. The winners of each match will play at 1 p.m. Pacific, 3 p.m. locally, on Saturday, Dec. 14, again on ESPNU.
This is Washington's 15th all-time appearance in the regional rounds. The Huskies have gone 10-4 in the round of 16, and 4-6 in the quarterfinals, last winning their region in 2013. Last weekend, Washington opened the tournament at home with 3-0 wins over Winthrop and South Carolina. The Huskies played three tight sets, winning three of the six sets by two points each, but won the other three sets by a combined 75-28. Kara Bajema shined for the Husky offense with 18 kills in both matches, hitting .532 for the weekend.
Kentucky (25-6) reached the Sweet 16 with a first round sweep of Southeast Missouri State followed by a sweep of Michigan. Senior Leah Edmond led the way with 15 kills against the Wolverines. Edmond is a three-time All-American and won SEC Player of the Year this season for the second-straight year. Junior libero Gabby Curry won SEC Libero of the year for the second time, and junior setter Madison Lilley and sophomore outside hitter Alli Stumler were also named All-SEC. Kentucky went 16-2 in the SEC to share the title with Florida. The Wildcats beat Florida both times but lost to Georgia and Texas A&M. Kentucky is the second-straight SEC opponent for UW, as UK had two 3-0 wins over South Carolina, which the Huskies beat in round two. More common opponents include USC, which Kentucky defeated in four sets, and Creighton and Utah, which Kentucky fell short against while UW went 1-0 against Creighton, 1-1 against Utah, and 0-2 against USC. The teams have some recent NCAA history, as Washington defeated Kentucky in the second round in 2016 in Seattle when the current seniors were freshmen.
Baylor has been the big surprise of the 2019 season, going 27-1 and earning the No. 1 overall seed after sharing the Big 12 title with Texas. The Bears' only loss came to Texas, but they also had a win against the Longhorns and also claimed big non-conference wins against UCLA, Creighton, Wisconsin, Marquette, Missouri, and Hawaii, all NCAA tournament teams. This is just the second Round of 16 appearance for Baylor and first since 2009. The Bears opened with a sweep of Sacred Heart and then swept the Pac-12's USC in round two. Junior Yossiana Pressley will be one of the top contenders for National Player of the Year as she was Big 12 Player of the Year while averaging a whopping 5.52 kills per set. Junior Hannah Lockin was also conference Setter of the Year and head coach Ryan McGuyre was Coach of the Year. Senior Shelly Stafford was also All-Big-12 First Team and leads the Bears with a .365 attack percentage.
Purdue earned the No. 16 seed with a fifth-place Big Ten finish at 14-6, and has now won eight in a row to get to 24-7 on the year. The Boilermakers defeated Wright State in their NCAA opener and then had a big 3-1 win over a Marquette squad that was ranked top-20 all season. Purdue hit .341 against Marquette, with 23 kills from Caitlyn Newton, who leads the team on the season with 3.84 kills per set. Grace Cleveland adds 3.29 kills per set and Blake Mohler is hitting .339 with 2.22 kills per set. Purdue has three servers averaging over 0.30 aces per set and posts 1.49 per set as a team. Cleveland and Mohler were both named All-Big Ten First Team and Newton was voted Second Team. The Huskies and Boilermakers have met once in the postseason, a 3-0 win for the Huskies in the round of 16 in 2005 en route to the national championship.
