SEATTLE - Washington Volleyball's six-week stretch of playing 13 of 14 matches away from home finishes up this week with another major road challenge at USC and UCLA. The Huskies (10-2, 1-1 Pac-12) will try to jockey for early position in the Pac-12 race on the always challenging L.A. swing. Friday, the Dawgs will visit USC (7-5, 1-1 Pac-12) for an 8 p.m. match at the Galen Center. Then Sunday at 2 p.m. UW visits Pauley Pavilion where UCLA (7-4, 2-0 Pac-12) was one of just two teams to go 2-0 in the first week of conference play.
Both matches this week will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks on the national channel.
The Dawgs opened Pac-12 play last week with a frustrating loss in Pullman against the Cougars, but followed that up with an historic victory, going into Maples Pavilion and winning on Stanford's home court for the first time since 2007. That snapped No. 1-ranked Stanford's 26-match Pac-12 winning streak. That win helped senior Kara Bajema earn a third straight Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor, the second Pac-12 player to do that since the separate categories started in 2011.
The Trojans had a tough five set loss at UCLA in its Pac-12 opener but then came back with a four set victory at home against Arizona. USC had some injury issues early in the season but senior All-American outside hitter Khalia Lanier is back now and leading the Trojans with 4.03 kills per set, hitting .264 and averaging 0.35 aces per set. Freshman Kalen Owes has been a big contributor with 2.72 kills per set and junior Brooke Botkin was a Second Team All-American last year and averages 2.62 kills per set. Jasmine Gross is hitting .446 to rank among the national leaders and sophomore Raquel Lazaro posts 10.73 assists per set. USC hits .256 as a team and holds opponents to .217
UCLA rallied to beat the Trojans last week with tough serving and defense and the Bruins got 14 kills from Savvy Simo and 13 from Mac May while Emily Ryan hit .600 with 10 kills. The Bruins then swept Arizona State to get to 2-0, hitting .311 against the Sun Devils. The Bruins are 7-4 but two losses came in the first two matches of the year against teams now ranked No. 1 and No. 2, Baylor and Nebraska. May leads the team with 4.34 kills per set and adds 2.91 digs per set and 0.37 aces/set. Simo is at 3.03 kills per set. UCLA is hitting .238 on the year and opponents hit .222 against them.
