Huskies Head to Berkeley to Face Cal On Sunday
January 19, 2019 | Women's Basketball
OPENING TIP
• Washington closes out its Bay area trip on Sunday, taking on California in a Pac-12 contest January 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
• The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with Kate Scott and Mary Murphy on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the UW/IMG Network broadcast with Gary Hill Jr. and Mia Augustavo-Fisher on KKNW 1150 AM, on the TuneIn App on GoHuskies.com.
• Amber Melgoza has amassed 952 points through three seasons at UW and needs just 48 points to become the 28th Husky to reach 1,000 points in her career.
• Washington is in the midst of a stretch of playing three of four games against ranked teams. The Huskies have the sixth-toughest remaining schedule of any NCAA DI team.
Scouting the Golden Bears
California comes into the game with just two wins in its last seven games after opening the season 9-0. The Golden Bears snapped a two-game losing-streak on Friday with a 77-63 win over Washington State thanks to a dominating performance from Kristine Anigwe, who scored 29 points and had 23 rebounds in the contest.
It was the second 20-20 game of the year for the senior, who leads the NCAA in rebounding at 15.0 boards per game and ranks second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 22.3 points per game. She is also tied for the NCAA lead in double-doubles with 16 on the season.
Senior guard Asha Thomas is close behind with 10.8 points per game while sophomore guard Kianna Smith is adding 9.6 points a contest. Thanks mostly to Anigwe, California is tied for third in the conference in rebounding margin at +8.5.
All-Time Series vs California
Washington holds a 46-25 lead in the all-time series, though California has won the last three meetings and 14 of the last 20 overall. The Huskies hold a 21-13 edge in Berkeley, splitting the last six games against Cal in the Bay area.
The Golden Bears swept all three games in the season series last year, though two of the three games were incredibly close. Washington held close with Cal in Berkeley last season before the Golden Bears pulled away late for a 69-60 win.
After the teams closed out the regular season with Cal winning 83-67 in Seattle, the teams met again in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament at KeyArena. The game went back and forth with the Huskies holding a one-point lead going into the fourth. However, Cal took back the lead and a last-second shot by Amber Melgoza fell short as the Bears won 71-68.
Up Next
The Huskies return home for a tough homestand, taking on No. 10 Oregon State on Friday at 8:00 p.m. before hosting No. 5 Oregon on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Washington then hits the road again, traveling to face the LA schools to start February.
Last Time Out
Missy Peterson and Khayla Rooks scored nine points each, but Washington struggled to match up with No. 6 Stanford, falling 91-54.
Washington had balance on offense with five players each scoring seven or more points, but the Huskies were unable to slow down Stanford's three-point game as the Cardinal drained 13 from distance. Washington was able to connect on eight from downtown, but hit just 34.5 percent from the field overall in the contest.. Washington held Utah to just three points over a 10+ minute stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters but could able score nine during that time.
Melgoza Nearing 1,000
Melgoza needs just 48 points to become the 28th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. The junior has averaged 13.0 points per game through her first three seasons at UW, which would give her the 14th-highest per game average of any of the Huskies' 1,000-point scorers.
Amber Alert
Melgoza continues to pace the Huskies, averaging 18.3 points per game through the first 18 games of the season–7th-best in the Pac-12. Once again, she has picked up her play in conference action, scoring 20+ points in three Pac-12 games, averaging 17.8 ppg.
Overall, Melgoza has scored 20 or more points in nine games this season and 23 times in her career. She led the Pac-12 in scoring in conference games last season, averaging 20.6 ppg.
Melgoza also leads the team in assists (2.8/game), rebounds (4.7/game) and is tied for the lead in steals (1.7/game). Melgoza recorded her first career double-double against Northern Arizona on Nov. 11 with 20 points and 10 rebound, coming up two assists shy of a triple-double with a career-best eight helpers.
That Halftime Lead...
The score at halftime has gone a long way to determine the score at the end of the game for the Huskies. This season, the Huskies are 8-0 when leading at halftime, but are 0-10 when trailing or tied at the break. Over the last two seasons, Washington is 15-4 when leading at the half but is 0-29 when tied or trailing at halftime.
Melgoza on Ann Meyers Drysdale Watch List
Amber Melgoza is one of 20 players from across the country to be named to the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Watch List as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Oct. 23. The winner will be revealed on ESPN during the 2019 Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida.
Griggsby Breaks Out
Sophomore guard Alexis Griggsby had a career game at Oregon on Friday, scoring 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting including going 6-of-11 from three-point range. She followed that up with a 15-point game at Oregon State including going 5-of-7 from three-point range.
After finishing the weekend with 41 points, Griggsby has scored 57 points (14.3 ppg) in UW's four games against Top 15 teams this year, including scoring team-bests of 11 vs. #4 Mississippi St. and 26 vs. #5 Oregon and adding 15 at #11 Oregon State.
Freshmen Power
Washington's freshmen trio of Haley Van Dyke, T.T. Watkins and Darcy Rees put together their best collective game so far this year, combining for 27 points against Colorado on Friday. Watkins led the group with 10 points–just the second time she has scored in double-figures this season–while Van Dyke added nine points and Rees scored eight.
The trio has seen quite a bit of action in Washington's first 17 games of the season with the trio averaging just over 17 minutes/game so far. Rees and Watkins have combined for 15 starts.
Van Dyke is averaging 5.7 ppg and has scored in double figures in four games thus far including a career-high 13 points against George Mason. Overall she is shooting 48.3% from the field.
Watkins earned her first start vs Montana and has made three starts overall. She scored 12 points against Northern Arizona and is averaging 5.0 points per game on the season. Watkins missed two games earlier in the year due to a concussion.
Rees has scored in double-figures in three games including a career-high 15 against Washington State. She also became the first player in two years to record at least three blocks in a game when she did so against George Mason. Overall, Rees is averaging 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and has started 11 games.
Darcy from Down Under
Darcy Rees had an impressive showing in her first-ever Pac-12 game, recording career-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds against Washington State. Rees connected on 7-of-14 from the field and had more offensive rebounds (6) than she had rebounds in any previous game this season. It was the third game in double-figures for the freshman from Adelaide, Australia, who is averaging 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds. She had back-to-back 10 point games against Duke and Fordham at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida earlier this year.
The Charity Stripe
The Huskies are third in the Pac-12 and 36th in the NCAA in free throw shooting at 74.5% (178-239). Amber Melgoza ranks second in the Pac-12 and 16th in the NCAA in free throws made (82) and is fourth in the Pac-12 and 25th nationally in free throw percentage at 85.4% (82-of-96). Melgoza is one of four players on the team converting at 80% or better along with Khayla Rooks (11-13; 84.6%), Hannah Johnson (13-15; 86.7%), Missy Peterson (17-21; 81.0%). Freshman Haley Van Dyke started her season making just 2-of-14 from the line, but has converted all eight free throw attempts over her last four games.
Strength of Schedule
Once again, the Huskies are not shying away from playing a difficult schedule in 2018-19. UW plays nearly half its schedule (13 games) against eight teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25 or receiving votes. In fact, the Huskies have the 10th-toughest schedule among the 351 NCAA DI programs when looking at the cumulative record of its opposition this season (330-146, .693). The Pac-12 conference boasts four teams in the AP Top 25 including three in the Top 15: #5 Oregon, #6 Stanford, #10 Oregon State and #19 Arizona State with California, Utah and Arizona receiving votes. With only Pac-12 games remaining Washington has the sixth-toughest remaining schedule in NCAA DI.
Huskies in the Rankings
Coming into the weekend, UW ranks among the Pac-12 leaders in a number of categories. The Huskies rank first in total steals (165), third in turnovers forced (17.00/game), fourth in free throw percentage (74.5%), fifth in total rebounds (678) and lead the conference in three-point field goals attempted (426).
Individually, Amber Melgoza ranks in the top 25 in the NCAA in two categories: 16th in field goals attempted (282), 16th in free throws made (82). She is also 31st in total points (321) and 38th in free throw attempts (94). She is also seventh in the Pac-12 and 40th in the NCAA in points per game (18.3), and ranks second in conference and 28th nationally in free-throw percentage (85.4%) and is seventh in the Pac-12 and 53rd in the NCAA in field goals made (112).
Non-Conference Recap
The Huskies posted a 7-5 record though the non-conference portion of the schedule, despite playing another tough non-conference slate. Through Dec. 20, Washington's opponents had a combined record of 71-39, which includes Seattle U at 0-12.
NCAA Free Throw Records
The Huskies matched an NCAA record earlier this year when they weren't awarded a free throw in the game against Fordham–a record shared with numerous teams. The Huskies now hold the NCAA records for fewest free throws in a game (0) and the most (69). On Nov. 30, 1991, UW attempted 69 free throws (making 51–also an NCAA record) in a 101-91 2 OT win vs. Northern Illinois.
