Huskies Falter in Fourth in 79-70 Loss at Cal
January 20, 2019 | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. --- Amber Melgoza scored 27 points and Washington connected on a season-best 13 three-pointers but the Huskies succumbed to a big fourth quarter by California in a 79-70 loss to the Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Washington (8-11, 1-6 Pac-12) played a solid all-around game, hanging with California (12-5, 3-3 Pac-12) through much of the game. The Huskies led after the first and third quarters and were tied with the Golden Bears at halftime. However, California, which was receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll, used a quick 12-3 run to start the fourth quarter and held off a late rally for the win.
Melgoza had an impressive game, scoring 27 points and adding five rebounds, four assists and connected on 4-of-4 from three-point range. Missy Peterson added 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting including going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Overall, the Huskies hit 13 three-pointers—tied for the most by the team in two seasons under head coach Jody Wynn. Washington was 13-of-23 from beyond the arc for a season-best 56.5%, besting the team's previous high of 40% (8-of-20) set at Oregon two weeks ago.
The teams opened the game going back and forth with California holding a four-point lead at 12-8 midway through the first quarter. The Huskies came alive, using an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to jump back in front 19-14 with two minutes left. Melgoza hit a pair of three-pointers over that run and added a tough runner in the lane while Mai-Loni Henson added a shot from deep as well. But Cal hit two from beyond the arc to close out the half, though the Huskies led 21-20 after one.
Washington went without a bucket over the first three minutes of the period as Cal stretched the lead back to three with back-to-back buckets to open the period. Missy Peterson would get the Huskies going with a three-pointer at the 6:49 mark to tie things up at 24. The teams would match buckets over the next three minutes with Jenna Moser's three-pointer with 2:24 to go proving to be the final points of the half. Despite a frantic final minute which saw both teams miss open layups and bodies flying all over the court, the teams headed to the locker room tied at 33-33.
Melgoza opened the third with a nice drive to the bucket to give Washington a brief lead, but California would respond with a 6-0 run to take a 39-35 lead at the 6:33 mark. Moser would nail a corner three-pointer followed by a layup by Melgoza after a defensive stop to pull the Huskies within one. After Cal hit back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead back to three, the Huskies came roaring back as Melgoza hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put Washington up 46-43 with 3:51 to play in the period. Peterson closed out the quarter with five straight points as Henson poked away the ball down low leading to a fast-break layup, then the sophomore hit a long three as the Huskies led 51-49 after three.
But Cal came out firing in the fourth, opening the quarter on a 7-1 run and outscoring the Huskies 12-3 over the first four minutes, taking a 61-54 lead on a three with 6:16 to play. Melgoza ended the run with a three-point play, followed by a three-pointer by Peterson made it a 63-60 game with 4:40 to go. But the Golden Bears would score on their next three possessions, getting offensive boards to create second-chance shots on the last two to take their largest lead of the game at 70-60 on a three-pointer with 1:57 left.
Washington responded with a nice putback by Darcy Rees with 1:29 left, then after a stop, got a three-pointer by Henson to draw back within five. But that was as close as the Huskies would get down the stretch as Cal converted 11-of-12 from the free throw line to hold on for the win.
Kristine Anigwe paced Cal with 30 points and 18 rebounds, hitting 13-of-18 from the field in the game. Recee' Caldwell added 15 points with McKenzie Forbes contributing 10.
Moser added nine points for the Huskies, who committed a season-low 10 turnovers in the game.
