Washington Offense Falters in 86-39 Loss to No. 9 Oregon State
January 25, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Amber Melgoza once again record a 20-point game, finishing one point shy of 1,000 for her career while Darcy Rees added 10 points, but Washington's offense struggled in an 86-39 loss to No. 9 Oregon State on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies drop to 8-12 on the season and fall to 1-7 in Pac-12 play. The Beavers improve to 16-3 and to 6-1 in the conference.
Washington struggled from the field throughout the game, shooting a season-low 21.7% from the field including 12.1% from three-point range. Melgoza had a team-high 20 points on 9-of-21 shooting, adding tow assists and four rebounds. She finished the game with 999 career points after recording her 11th 20+point game of the season and 25th of her career.
Rees added 10 points including hitting a pair of three-pointers in the game to give her four in her last nine attempts after starting the season 0-for-17.
After the teams opened the game by trading buckets, Washington went cold while Oregon State caught fire. The Beavers quickly scored eight unanswered points and went on a long 23-2 run over a nearly six minutes stretch to take a 27-6 lead with 1:31 left in the period. Darcy Rees snapped the drought with a pair of free throws, with 33 seconds left, but the Beavers would drain a three-pointer as time expired to take a 30-8 lead after one.
Oregon State would keep the run going scoring the first eight points of the quarter to go up 38-8 1:30 into the period. Alexis Griggsby got an offensive board and put back to give the Huskies their first points of the quarter at the 8:06 mark. Peterson chipped in a three-pointer two minutes later and Melgoza would hit a pair of runners minutes later. But Washington struggled to stop the Beavers down the stretch and Oregon State would take a 56-17 lead to the half.
The teams would exchange three pointers to start the second half, with Rees draining a pair of three-pointers for the Huskies. Melgoza added three more on a great and-one play, but the Beavers would answer back again with a 10-0 run over a four-minute stretch and led 72-28 after three.
Melgoza took over the early part of the fourth quarter, scoring seven-straight capped by a three-pointer early on. Later in the quarter she would add a tough jumper in the lane to give her 20 points in the game and 999 for her career before taking a seat for the rest of the night.
Destiny Slocum scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting after scoring a career-high 30 points when the teams met in Corvallis earlier this month. Mikayla Pivec scored 12 points and added a career-high 19 rebounds in the contest.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, hosting No. 5 Oregon on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Huskies will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports day with a pre-game clinic and giveaways throughout the game.
