No. 6 Stanford Too Much for Washington
January 18, 2019 | Women's Basketball
PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Missy Peterson and Khayla Rooks scored nine points each, but Washington struggled to match up with No. 6 Stanford, falling 91-54 on Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Huskies drop to 8-10 on the season and move to 1-5 in the Pac-12 while the Cardinal improve to 15-1 and stay a perfect 5-0 in conference action.
Washington had balance on offense with five players each scoring seven or more points, but the Huskies were unable to slow down Stanford's three-point game as the Cardinal drained 13 from distance. Washington was able to connect on eight from downtown, but hit just 34.5 percent from the field overall in the contest.
Rooks' nine points were the most by the sophomore since the second game of the season and included a pair of three-pointers. Peterson added nine and a team-high seven rebounds, leading the team in boards for the third-straight game.
Amber Melgoza and Jenna Moser each added eight points for the Huskies with Haley Van Dyke contributing seven.
After Stanford jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, the Huskies got on the board thanks to a great running bank shot by Melgoza. But the Cardinal kept the run going, rattling off seven-straight points to take a 12-2 7:19 into the contest. Neither team would score over the next three minutes until the Huskies got a steal and Moser made a layup at the 4:17 mark. Stanford continued to keep the pressure up over the course of the next three minutes and took a 27-11 lead after one.
Washington ramped up the defense and did a solid job of holding down the Cardinal in the second quarter. Melgoza opened the quarter with a nice jumper and Missy Peterson hit a deep three as the Huskies closed the gap to 29-16 early in the second. But the Cardinal answered back with a pair of three pointers to stretch the lead to 19. From there, the two teams traded buckets until Moser hit a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds to make it a 44-27 game at the half.
The two teams continued the back and forth pace through the start of the third quarter with a Peterson layup at the 6:43 mark making it 52-36. But Stanford took over from there, using a 17-1 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 69-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
Rooks would open the fourth strong, scoring the first four points of the period, but the Cardinal would answer right back with a quick 7-0 run and cruised from there, closing out the game on a 13-3 run to account for the final spread.
Alanna Smith had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead Stanford while Kiana Williams added 22.
Washington closes our the trip to the Bay on Sunday, taking on California at 2:00 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
