SEATTLE - School is in session starting this week at the University of Washington and the Husky volleyball team already has a test at the end of the week. The Dawgs are back home looking to build on a six-match winning streak but with a pair of top-25 opponents standing in the way. Friday evening, UW hosts 23rd-ranked Colorado on Welcome Back Dawg Pack night, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday at 12 noon it will be the first meeting this year for the Huskies and 25th-ranked Utes.
In addition to the Dawg Pack events on Friday, the match against Colorado will be a part of SAASHA (Student-Athletes Against Sexual Harassment & Assault) week on campus. SAASHA will host a table providing information on the organization as well as initiatives they have created and ways to get involved. In addition, students can "Take the Pledge", signing a form pledging to create healthy cultures and relationships within their respective communities.
If the first week of Pac-12 play is any indicator, teams will be working overtime for every win going forward. Six matches went the full five sets last week in the conference, and the Huskies played two fo them, coming out on top against Washington State and Oregon State, the latter a comeback from 0-2 down. Samantha Drechsel led the conference over the weekend with 39 kills, 21 vs. Washington State and 18 against Oregon State, while Kara Bajema's 36 kills tied for second. Ella May Powell's 101 assists were second-most overall.
Colorado had a pair of five setters as well, coming out 1-1 with a five set win over Utah and then a five set loss to USC. Senior Alexa Smith had 15 kills against the Utes to lead the way and then had 18 kills against the Trojans. On the year, the Buffs are 9-4. They visited Alaska Airlines Arena for the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge, defeating Iowa and falling to Illinois, but have added players back to their lineup since then. Senior middle Naghede Abu is back in the mix and hitting .398 with 2.30 kills per set and 1.25 blocks per set. Justine Spann is second behind Smith with 2.98 kills per set. Colorado is hitting .239 for the year and holding opponents to .194.
Utah comes in ranked 25th with a 8-5 record and 0-2 in conference with two close defeats to the Buffs and a four-set loss to UCLA. Utah is fifth in the league with a .257 attack percentage but has given up the highest opponent attacking mark at .230. Despite the losses, Utah served up the most aces of any team in the opening week, hitting 16. Dani Drews racked up 38 kills last week, second only to UW's Drechsel and in one fewer set. Drews leads the Pac-12 in aces for the season with 0.48 per set, 24 total. Freshman Phoebe Grace is hitting .341, 10th highest in the league. Utah and USC are the only teams with multiple hitters in the top-10 in kills per set with Drews ranking fifth at 3.96 and Lauga Gauta 10th at 3.44.
