Dawgs Fall 3-1 To 19th-Ranked Arizona
May 06, 2017 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. ย โ Arizona starter Cameron Ming pitched a complete game and catcher Cesar Salazar hit a two-run home run for all the offense the 19th-ranked Wildcats would need in a 3-1 win Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.
ย
Ming (6-1) threw exactly 100 pitches and allowed just five Huskies hits โ all coming in two innings โ to record the first complete game of the season for the Wildcats (30-15, 11-12 Pac-12).
ย
Five different Huskies (24-19, 10-10) recorded hits and three UW pitchers combined to allow just seven hits.
ย
Huskies' starter Jordan Jones (4-7) had retired eight-straight Wildcats' hitters before giving up a one-out single to first baseman JJ Matijevic in the fourth inning. That was followed by a first-pitch home run over the right-field wall by Salazar. His blast was the second of the year for the Arizona catcher and just the second this season allowed by the freshman Jones.
ย
Ming, meanwhile, surrendered back-to-back hits to Levi Jordan and Jack Meggs to lead off the game and then promptly set down the next 14 UW batters. Designated hitter Josh Cushing broke the string in the sixth inning with a lead-off double and he would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Jordan that made the score 2-1.
ย
Arizona tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by second baseman Kyle Lewis for the final run of the game.
ย
Washington threatened in the seventh, having two batters reach on errors, but a double play and ground out ended the threat. Ming would go on to retire the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings.
ย
Jones ended up going 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Chris Micheles for 2 1/3 innings. Alex Hardy recorded the final three outs on the hill for the Huskies.
ย
Arizona has now won the first two games of the series, while Washington dropped to .500 in Pac-12 play for the first time this season.
ย
The Huskies and Wildcats wrap up the series Sunday with a noon first pitch. The game will air on the Pac-12 Network.
