Bats Come Alive, But Huskies Give Up Five In Ninth To Lose, 12-11

Nick Quintana hit a comebacker to Leo Nierenberg (1-4) on the mound with the tying run at third base and winning run on second. After looking the runner back to the base on third, the freshman fired the ball wide of first base allowing both runs to score, setting off a wild celebration at second base.
Alfonso Rivas and Cesar Salazar had RBI singles to score the first two runs and a wild pitch allowed the third run to score, setting up the final play and sending Arizona away with the win.
Washington pounded out a season-high 17 hits with seven Huskies recording multiple hits. Third baseman Willie MacIver and second baseman Levi Jordan led the way with three hits each. Jordan reached base all six times he came to bat and was 3-for-3 including his first home run of the season.
Starter Joe DeMers was excellent again for the Huskies and left after six innings of work with his team leading 8-4.
After struggling Saturday night at the plate, the Huskies' bats woke up with three runs – all coming with two outs – in the top of the third inning. Jordan provided the initial lift, blasting a two-run homer off Arizona starter Cody Deason to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. For Jordan, it was his second career homer. Gage Matuszak, who reached on a single, scored ahead of Jordan.
The Huskies were not done in the inning though as Jack Meggs reached on an infield single and MJ Hubbs was safe on an error by third baseman Nick Quintana that put runners on the corners. Catcher Joey Morgan followed with a single for his team-high 33rd RBI.
Arizona (30-16, 11-13) answered back immediately in its half of the third scoring twice against DeMers to cut the lead to 3-2. Designated hitter Rivas drove in the first run on a RBI single and JJ Matijevic followed with a sacrifice fly.
UW got one of the runs back in the fourth on a RBI infield single by Jack Meggs. The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs and the Huskies' senior center field hit a hard ground ball back to the mound that went in and out of Rio Gomez's glove and rolled just far enough away for everyone to be safe on the play.
Matijevic erased the Huskies' lead with one swing of the bat in the fifth inning smashing a two-run homer over the fence in center field, tying the game up at 4-4. It was the first of two blasts for the Arizona first baseman. He had five RBI in the game and upped his Pac-12-best total to 52 on the season.
The Huskies wasted little time re-taking the lead, 5-4, in the sixth inning. Matuszak tripled to start the frame and would score later with one out when Robby Medel unleashed a wild pitch.
They would add on three more runs in the seventh to take a four-run advantage, 8-4. Nick Kahle drove home one run with a ground-rule double and AJ Graffanino would send two more runs home with two outs on a single up the middle.
Once again, Arizona would not go away and scored three times in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Rivas hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run and Matijevic would strike again with and opposite-way homer over the left-field wall.
The Huskies would once again have an answer and score three times in the eighth inning – their third three-run inning of the game. Morgan hit a RBI triple, followed by a run-scoring infield hit by MacIver. Kyle London would cap the scoring by laying down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that sent MacIver home and made the score 11-7.
But, as they found out, Arizona is a dangerous team with the bats. The Wildcats pounded out 14 hits and has three batters collect three each.
Washington will try to re-group and returns to action Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for Dollar Dog Night at Husky Ballpark against Seattle U in the final game of their annual series, which is tied 1-1.
