No. 1 OSU Holds Off UW, 5-2, To Even Series
April 14, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – No. 1 Oregon State scored in the first inning and never looked back, beating No. 30 Washington, 5-2, Friday at Husky Ballpark in front of 2,478 fans.
Every starter had a hit as the Beavers (29-2, 13-1 Pac-12) collected 15 total – the most by a Husky opponent this year. The win evened the three-game series at 1-1.
Five Washington (20-13, 7-4) pitchers kept the game close, but OSU starter Bryce Fehmel (4-1) was effective over 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Beavers.
For a second-consecutive day, Oregon State took a lead before its starting pitcher even stepped on the mound. The Beavers strung three hits together off of UW starter Leo Nierenberg (1-2), the last one a RBI single by designated hitter Trevor Larnach, to go up 1-0.
They tacked on two more runs in the fourth to expand their lead to 3-0. The first three batters to face reliever Jordan Jones all reached to start the inning. Kadyn Grenier doubled and came around to score on a RBI single by Jack Anderson. Anderson moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Michael Gretler.
Washington cut into the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by AJ Graffanino that made the score 3-1. Levi Jordan singled and KJ Brady doubled to set up the Huskies first run of the game.
Grenier hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Adley Rutschman doubled home a run in the eighth to expand OSU's lead to 5-1.
The Huskies answered for a run in their half of the eighth to cut the lead to three runs. Jack Meggs singled and MJ Hubbs doubled to start the inning, setting up Willie MacIver for a RBI ground out.
But that would be all the scoring for the Huskies as Mitch Hickey shut the Huskies down in the eighth and Jake Mulholland faced the tying run in the ninth, but was able to slam the door shut as he got Meggs to ground back to the mound to end the game.
Three Huskies collected two hits on the day: Meggs, Graffanino and Joey Morgan. Both Meggs and Hubbs have career-high eight-game hit streaks going and Hubbs has now reached base safely in 26 straight games.
Jones pitched the longest of the Huskies five pitchers. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs and recorded four strikeouts.
Washington and Oregon State wrap up their three-game series Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
