Record Crowd Watches UW Fall To No. 1 OSU, 3-0

SEATTLE – No. 30 Washington locked up with No. 1 Oregon State in a pitcher's duel Saturday in front of a Husky Ballpark record crowd of 2,690 before the visiting Beavers broke through with three runs in the seventh. The runs turned out to be the only scoring in a glorious day at the park as the Beavers (30-2, 14-1 Pac-12) held off a late Husky threat for a 3-0 win and 2-1 series victory.
Husky starter Joe DeMers kept Oregon State at bay through six innings, allowing just one base runner to reach second base, before things unraveled in the seventh inning. The Beavers loaded the bases off DeMers (3-3) and reliever Greg Minier replaced him with one out.
The senior lefty got the first batter he faced, Elliott Cary, to pop out to third in foul territory, but he walked Nick Madrigal on four pitches to force in a run.
Minier jumped ahead in the count, 0-2, on Steven Kwan, but the sophomore left fielder hit a two-run single through the right-side of the infield that made the score 3-0.
DeMers' final line was three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, walked two batters and struck out one.
Minier ended up throwing 2 2/3 innings of relief and struck out four batters.
"We pitched well enough to win. No question," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said.
"Joe DeMers was a good as you could be against the No. 1 team in the country. I was really happy for Joe and proud of him."
The Huskies' (20-14, 7-5) opportunities were few and far between against OSU starter Jake Thompson (8-0). He scattered six hits, walked three and struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings.
The Huskies best chance to take control of the game came in the second inning when they loaded the bases after there were two outs, but Thompson got KJ Brady to fly out to deep center field to end the threat. UW would also load the bases in the eighth inning, but reliever Jake Mulholland induced Willie MacIver to roll into a fielder's choice to end that inning.
Huskies' designated hitter Nick Kahle started the ninth with a lead-off single, but Mulholland retired the next three batters to earn his fifth save of the season.
Washington had seven hits on the day with AJ Graffanino picking up a pair.
MJ Hubbs doubled in his second at bat to extend his personal-best hit streak to nine games and he has now reached base safely in 27-straight games.
The Huskies travel across the state to play the Cougars in a three-game series on the Palouse. The first game is Friday at 5:00 p.m. and all three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
