SEATTLE - It's always a big weekend when Washington and Oregon State meet on the diamond. But this weekend, if the sheer rivalry of the series between the two schools wasn't enough, there are some historic implications on the line for the No. 1 ranked Beavers and conference-standings ramifications for the Huskies.
Oregon State (28-1, 12-0 Pac-12) rides into Seattle with a 23-game win streak and are seeking to tie the Pac-12 record for most-consecutive victories if they can win Friday. They are unanimously ranked No. 1 in the country and will be the first team to arrive in Seattle ranked No. 1 since StanfordΒ in 2004 (the Huskies won two-of-three in that series).
The 30th-ranked Huskies (19-12, 6-3) sit at second in the Pac-12 standings and have a 1 1/2-game advantage over third and can either cement their place in the conference or fall back into the pack with the nine other teams chasing the Beavers. Either way, it should be an exciting weekend andΒ Washington coach Lindsay Meggs, while focused on his team and trying to figure out the way to slay the dragon, can also step back and appreciate the run that Oregon State is currently on.
"It's amazing," he said. "You just don't see that. Obviously, we're going to have our hands full, but at the same time we look at this as an opportunity and we're very excited to take the field Thursday night."
Β
"I think everybody feels good about the way we're playing," Meggs said. "We still have a ways to go and a lot to improve on, but the mojo is good. We're excited."
The rivalry always attracts nice crowds at Husky Ballpark, but this Saturday should be an especially fun-filled day with packed stands. On Saturday, it is Faculty & Staff Appreciation day, Pups & Parents day and Little League day with ticket bargains for almost every family.
With Easter falling on Sunday, the Huskies and Beavers will play three games, starting on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and running through Saturday.
This weekend's series will be carried by the Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Kevin Stocker calling the action. Constant game updates will be tweeted @UW_Baseball and fans can follow live stats and watch live online by clicking links available on GoHuskies.com.Β
SERIES HISTORY VS. OREGON STATE
Oregon State holds the all-time series advantage over Washington 236-188-1. In their last matchup, the Huskies beat the Beavers, 3-2, in 12 innings on April 3, but OSU took the series, 2-1, in Corvallis. The Beavs have won each of the last three series against the Huskies. The last time UW won a series they took 2-of-3 against No. 5 OSU in 2013 at Husky Ballpark. The opening game of that series was rained out and the Huskies swept a Saturday double-header before falling in the Sunday finale. The series between the two teams dates back to 1910, where the Huskies took the first two games.Β
TEAM NOTES:Β
β’ Against No. 1: The Huskies are hosting their first series against a No. 1 team since 2004 when top-ranked Stanford visited, with the Diamond Dawgs taking 2-of-3 from the Cardinal in that series. The last time the Huskies played the No. 1 ranked team was in 2010 when they lost 2-of-3 at Arizona State.
β’ Close Calls: The Huskies are 7-2 in games won in the last at-bat. Of the Huskies' 12 losses, seven are by one run and three are by two runs. The Huskies have also won 6 one-run games. UW entered the year 1-99 in games in which they trailed after 8 innings but this season, the Huskies have won three games in which they were trailing entering the 9th inning.

They have not committed an error in four-straight games and have just two errors over the last 10 games. It has been 23 games since the Huskies last committed more than one error in a game.
β’ Cat-chers Like Reflexes: The defense behind the plate has been especially good, as UW catchers Joey Morgan and Nick Kahle have thrown on base stealers at a .733 clip (11-of-15), and are tied for the league-low with 2 passed balls and have caught a pitching staff that is tied for the league-low with 8 wild pitches.Β
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:Β
β’ Jack Meggs enters the weekend having played 190 games in his career, the most among all active Pac-12 players. His total ranks 9th on UW's all-time list and he will pass Ed Erickson (191) for 8th with two more starts. If he plays in every regular season game this season, he will bring his total to 213 which would tie him for 3rd most all time.
β’ MJ Hubbs has a current streak of reaching base safely in 24-straight games & has reached in 26-of-27 starts. His streak is the longest since Andrew Ely reached in 25-straight in 2014.Β
