Huskies Take Down No. 1 OSU, Snap Beavs 23-Game Win Streak
April 13, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Huskies used timely hitting, outstanding pitching and dazzling defense Thursday night to beat No. 1 ranked Oregon State, 3-2, Thursday night at Husky Ballpark and snap the Beavers' 23-game win streak.
Washington (20-12, 7-3 Pac-12) scored three times in the sixth inning, Noah Bremer threw eight innings of solid relief and Levi Jordan made a spectacular play to end the game as the Huskies beat a top-ranked team for the first time since Arizona State in 2010.
"It was a great team win," Husky coach Lindsay Meggs said.
Oregon State (28-2, 12-1) scored in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead and held it until the sixth. Husky starter Chris Micheles had a rough start to the game, but did a nice job of minimizing the damage, holding the Beavers to one run. Nick Madrigal doubled to start the game and came around to score on clean-up hitter Trevor Larnach's double. OSU would go on to load the bases, but Micheles got a fly out from Cadyn Grenier to end the threat.
Beavers' starter Luke Heimlich (5-1) got a strikeout for the second out and was poised to escape the jam when he got Huskies' first baseman John Naff to ground the ball to Madrigal at shortstop. But the sophomore short-hopped the ball to first base where KJ Harrison couldn't handle the throw. Two runs scored on the error and the Huskies had the lead, 3-1.
The Huskies had an excellent chance to add to their cushion in the eighth when they loaded the bases with no outs, but OSU reliever Mitchell Verburg wiggled out of the jam unscathed to set up the dramatic ninth inning.
Bremer entered the ninth having already thrown 111 pitches with the top of Oregon State's lineup due up, but Meggs knew he was going to keep his ace in the game and was confident it was the right call.
"We felt like we had protected him up to this point and that he had something left in the tank," Meggs explained. "We were going to let him go for a little bit."
The final frame got off to a rough start for Bremer as Madrigal singled for his third hit of the game to start the inning. He later stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Morgan from behind the plate. KJ Harrison drove Madrigal home with a single and represented the tying run on base with one out.
Bremer got Larnach to line out to deep center field for a loud second out before Jordan saved the night. The Huskies' junior second baseman dove deep into the hole between first and second in shallow right field to snag a grounder by Michael Gretler and threw him out at first on a bang-bang play that sent the Huskies into a wild celebration.
"That's as good of a play you'll ever see," Meggs said. "I don't know if I've ever seen a better play to end a game. It was unbelievable. That guy can really defend. He's been awesome."
Bremer ended the night having thrown a career-high 134 pitches, but more importantly was able to keep the offensive-minded Beavers at bay for the most part. He allowed nine hits and one walk, but used a particular nasty curveball and spotted his fastball well in picking up nine strikeouts.
Oregon State outhit the Huskies, 11-8. MacIver and AJ Graffanino each had a pair of hits for the Huskies to lead UW's offense.
Washington and Oregon State continue their three-game series Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.

Jack Meggs got things started with a lead-off double and was sacrificed to third by MJ Hubbs. After Joey Morgan walked, Willie MacIver doubled into the left-center gap to score Meggs and tied the game at 1-1.VIDEO: Huskies snap OSU's 23 game winning streak https://t.co/CE621vWUQ5
