Hubbs Scores Winning Run In Ninth, UW Wins 3-2
March 12, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ MJ Hubbs scrambled home on a throwing error in the ninth inning to lift No. 12 Washington to a 3-2 victory in the final game of a four-game series versus Indiana State (7-9) Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Washington (9-6) held a 2-1 advantage entering the ninth, but Indiana State designated hitter Damon Giesler greeted Huskies' reliever Josh Burgmann with a first-pitch home run over the right-field wall.
Β
The Huskies did not hang their heads, though, as Alex Hardy (3-0) came into the game and prevented any further damage, setting up the dramatic bottom half of the inning.
Β
Hubbs led off the Huskies' half of the ninth with a double, but after an intentional walk to Joey Morgan and back-to-back strikeouts by Sycamores' closer Austin Conway (0-1), UW had tough sledding ahead if they were going to escape with a win in regulation.
Β
With two outs, designated hitter Josh Cushing chopped the first pitch he saw past Conway to the shortstop Clay Dungan, who threw late to first base for a hit. When the throw pulled first baseman Jeff Zahn off the bag and the ball rolled away, Hubbs took off from third and easily beat the throw home to score the winning run.
Β
The win gave the Huskies a 2-2 split with the Sycamores.
Β
"I thought we pitched well enough to win three games, but we're struggling with the flow of the game, getting the lead-off guy on and taking better at bats with runners in scoring position," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said.
Β
"We need to fix that and we'll work on that this week."
Β
Despite the team's struggles at the plate, the Huskies did score all three of their runs with two outs in the inning. But, Indiana State was equally tough with two outs.
Β
Indiana State struck first with a two-out RBI single in the second inning by Zahn, but Washington answered back in its half of the inning. John Naff walked and with two outs, the senior Cushing chased him home with a triple into the right-center gap to make the score 1-1.
Β
The score remained tied until the sixth when Hubbs came through with a clutch RBI single. Kyle London was hit by a pitch to start the inning, sacrificed to second and took third on a groundout. Hubbs delivered a two-out single into left field for his 10th RBI of the year and a 2-1 advantage.
Β
Geisler's home run in the ninth wiped out a chance for freshman starter Chris Micheles to pick up a win. He was outstanding over six innings of work, allowing just the one earned run on two hits and four walks. He struck out two and lowered his ERA to 2.60 in 17 1/3 innings for the season.
Β
Hubbs and Cushing had two hits each. Both squads had five hits as a team.
Β
The Huskies start Pac-12 play next week and host defending conference champion Utah in a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch and will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Network.
