SEATTLE - Pac-12 play has arrived and the first weekend of action pits the 2016 champion Utah Utes (9-5) against last year's runner-up, the Washington Huskies (9-6). The host Huskies have yet to drop a series this season and look to continue that trend at Husky Ballpark in their three-game series that starts Friday.
The Huskies and Utes wrapped up Pac-12 play in 2016 against each other and last year's conference race came down to the final day of action with Utah winning the series and thus earning the Conference's automatic bid. While the sting from coming so close to winning the Pac-12 is still there, Coach Lindsay MeggsΒ believes the team is more focused on the challenge ahead instead of the hurt from last year.
"I don't think we need to remind them about that," Meggs said. "I think it's still pretty fresh in everyone's mind and a lot of our guys who are veterans can also remember a Utah team that struggled to get a conference win and they've come full circle.
"Their Friday and Saturday guys are as good as anyone in the league. It's going to likely be low-scoring Friday and Saturday, so we're going to have to play really defense, take advantage of any opportunities we get and play as well as we can play.
Friday and Sunday's games will be telecast and carried live online by the Pac-12 Network with Troy Clardy and former Husky Kevin Stocker calling all the action. Saturday's game will be live streamed on Pac-12.com with Gary Hill calling the play-by-play. SERIES HISTORY VS. UTAH
Washington leads Utah in the overall series, 12-8, and holds an 11-4 advantage since the Utes joined the Pac-12 in 2012. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1974 when Utah beat UW 10-2. The teams didn't meet again until 1995. The last time the teams met in Seattle, the Huskies closed out the 2015 season with a three-game sweep against the Utes. UW had won 9-straight against Utah before the Utes won the final two regular season games in Salt Lake City last season, which won them the Pac-12 title.
ODDS AND ENDS:Β
β’ Bremer Charging Up The Lists: Β Last time out, Noah Bremer eclipsed the 200-inning mark for his career. He is at 206.0 and is on pace to crack the Huskies top-five all-time innings pitched list. He needs to reach 241 IP to tie Pete Tjaarda (1985-88). He has also made 35 career starts and will tie Aaron West and Tim Campbell for 10th all-time in UW history next time out. Bremer has recorded 15 strikeouts looking this season, second-most among Pac-12 leaders. He is tied for 5th with 27 K's on the season.Β
β’ More Bremer: Β Bremer has allowed 2 or fewer runs in 26 of 35 career starts and has a career earned run average of 2.80.
β’ (Throwing) Smoke And DeMers: Β Joe DeMers threw the first complete game shutout of his career last week, 8-0 over Indiana State. It was the first by any Husky pitcher since Tyler Davis blanked Georgia Tech, 8-0, on May 31, 2014 during the NCAA Oxford Regional. DeMers is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 28.2 inning pitched this season. He has went 7 innings or longer in 3 of his 4 starts after recording a season-high of 6 1/3 innings in 16 starts as a freshman in 2016.Β
β’ Stealers Beware: The Huskies are nearly impossible to steal against. Opponents have recorded just one stolen base in 10 attempts. Joey Morgan leads the Pac-12 and is a perfect 7-for-7 in gunning out runners trying to swipe bases.
β’ Hot Hubbs: Senior MJ Hubbs is providing a little bit of everything for the Dawgs. He leads the Huskies in batting avg. (.359), slugging% (.538), Β stolen bases (5) and tied for runs scored (11). He has reached base safely in all 11 of his starts.Β
β’ Love Some Glove: Second baseman Levi Jordan is one of the best defensive players in the country. He has not made an error in 45 chances this year and has a career fielding percent of .985, making just 8 errors in 534 chances.Β
β’ Hardy Appetite For Wins: Junior righty Alex Hardy is taking full advantage of opportunites to win games. In four relief appearances he has picked up a team high three wins.Β
β’ Dawgs Days: The Huskies 9-2 during day games and 0-4 in night games.
β’ Wins/Losses: Of the Huskies' six losses, five are by two runs or less. Β In UW's nine wins, the pitchers have combined for a 1.87 ERA.Β
