Bremer, Meggs Lift UW Past Utah, 3-1, In Game 1
March 18, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ Noah Bremer pitched seven innings of scoreless relief and Jack Meggs hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lift the Huskies to a 3-1 win over Utah in the first game of a double header at Husky Ballpark on Saturday.
Β
Bremer entered the weekend having made 35-straight starts on the hill for the Huskies. But in a strategic plan to bring him out of the bullpen, the junior from Berkeley, Calif. struck out eight and allowed three hits in his first relief appearance since Feb. 16, 2015, which happened to be his collegiate debut.
Β
Freshman Chris Micheles took the ball for the 23rd-ranked Huskies (10-6, 1-0 Pac-12) out of the gate and things got off to an inauspicious start as Utah (9-6, 0-1) lead-off hitter DaShawn Keirsey Jr. smacked the first pitch of the game over the right-field wall for a quick 1-0 lead. But, Washington responded right back in its half of the first to grab the 2-1 lead.
Β
KJ Brady led off with a triple and the No. 2 hitter Meggs launched the first pitch he saw from Utah starter Jayson Rose (2-1) high into the sky and about an estimated 375-feet for his second home run of the season.
Β
The Huskies added to their lead in the fifth on a misplayed double that made the score 3-1. With MJ Hubbs on first after a two-out walk, John Naff lined a ball to left field that Chandler Anderson ran back on and by the time he turned around the ball fell safely in front of him. Hubbs was able to motor around from first and Naff easily made it to second base.
Β
Meanwhile, Bremer (2-2) was in cruise control on the hill for the Dawgs. He retired 11-straight, a streak that stopped with one out in the seventh. But he ended up striking out the side in the seventh and retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth to pick up the win.
Β
John Naff paced the Huskies offense with two of UW's nine hits.
Β
The Huskies and Utes play a second game Saturday afternoon and wrap up the series Sunday with a start Pac-12 play next week and host defending conference champion Utah in a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch and will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Network.
