Walk-Off Walk Leads Huskies Past Utes In 10 Innings
March 18, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Levi Jordan walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to force in the winning run and give the 23rd-ranked Huskies a 4-3 win and doubleheader sweep over Utah Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The game had been tied, 3-3, since the fourth inning before Washington (11-6, 2-0 Pac-12) was able to get to Utah (9-7, 0-2) reliever Dylan Drachler (0-1) in extra innings. Joey Morgan started the winning rally with a one-out double. Pinch-hitter Nick Kahle was walked intentionally and pinch-hitter Josh Cushing worked the count for a walk of his own. Jordan fouled off the first pitch of his at bat before taking four-straight balls to send the home team into a celebration at first base.
Alex Hardy (4-0) pitched a perfect 10th inning to pick up his fourth win in five appearances.
Hardy was the third reliever of the game for the Huskies and part of a UW bullpen that was nearly untouchable in both games of the double header. Including the Huskies game one win, 3-1, the bullpen threw 15 scoreless innings, allowed just six hits and struck out 13 Utes batters.
The offense notched nine hits in the nightcap, which proved to be just enough to squeak by with two wins.
Washington scored in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. Morgan collected a RBI single – the first of four hits on the evening for the junior catcher – with two outs in the first inning and Gage Matuszak scored an unearned run in the second to keep the momentum going from their earlier victory in game one.
But, the Utes stole momentum right back in the top of the third, scoring three times to take a 3-2 advantage. Utah loaded the bases off starter Josh Burgmann before an out was recorded. Jordan Jones took over from there and Utah chipped away at the lead, scoring on a RBI single by DaShawn Keirsey Jr., a bases loaded walk to Dallas Carroll and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Simmons.
Washington tied things back up, 3-3, in the fourth on a KJ Brady double. Levi Jordan started the inning with an infield single and was sacrificed to third by AJ Graffanino. Brady stepped up and sliced the ball down the left-field line sending Jordan home. It was part of a 3-for-4 night for the junior outfielder.
Jones was fantastic in relief, lasting 6 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out three.
The Huskies and Utes wrap up the series Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. The game will be carried live on the Pac-12 Network.
