SEATTLE - Before the top-10 battle between the Huskies and Cardinal on the gridiron, another top-10 battle between Washington and Stanford kicks off week two of Pac-12 volleyball this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Huskies come home off a big road win at USC with an 11-1 record and ranked No. 7 nationally, while Stanford moved up to No. 9 this week with a record of 8-2 and 2-0 in conference. This will be the fifth year in a row that the Huskies and Cardinal are both ranked in the AVCA top-10 at the time of their match at Alaska Airlines Arena, with UW going 3-1 in the previous four meetings. Wednesday's match will be the nationally televised match on the Pac-12 Networks.
After battling Stanford, the Huskies will have to turn right around and face California on Thursday, in the only back-to-back matches UW will have in Pac-12 play. The Thursday night match, starting at 7:00 p.m., will not be televised but will be streamed on GoHuskies.com.
Washington will try to start a couple new home streaks this week after some notable ones were broken in a loss to WSU last week. The Huskies had won 19 straight home matches, and 30 consecutive Pac-12 home matches. Washington State also upset then-No. 9 UCLA last week and jumped to No. 17 in the top-25 on Monday, with a season-high eight Pac-12 teams now appearing in the top-25.
The Cardinal had a challenging nonconference schedule, with five-set losses to San Diego and Purdue, but big wins over Big Ten powers Minnesota, Penn State, and Illinois. Stanford had a four set win at Cal and a 3-0 win at Oregon State to start Pac-12 play. Stanford is hitting .271 on the year and limiting opponents to .168, in part by leading the NCAA with 3.49 blocks per set. Freshman Audriana Fitzmorris is scoring 1.70 blocks per set and former First Team All-American Inky Ajanaku has returned from missing the 2015 season due to injury and is averaging 1.52 blocks per set and ranks second in he Pac-12 with a .427 attack percentage. 2015 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Haley Hodson did not play during Stanford's first two Pac-12 matches but is an offensive force, while another freshman Kathryn Plummer, has stepped right in averaging 4.00 kills per set last week and hitting .591.
California is 6-6 and 0-2 in conference play, dropping the 1-3 decision to Stanford then losing in three sets at Oregon last week. Cal is hitting .220 on the year and has allowed a .231 hitting percentage to its opponents. Against Stanford, freshman Bailee Huizenga had a great match with 19 kills, hitting .567. Senior middle blocker Jenelle Jordan leads the team with a .355 attack percentage and is second with 2.74 kills per set, while Huizenga averages 2.93 for the year and is now hitting .282 overall. Senior setter Alyssa Jensen leads the Pac-12 with 11.43 assists per set, while senior libero Maddy Kerr ranks fourth in the conference with 4.30 digs per set.
