SEATTLE - It will be a Pac-12 Challenge that wraps up nonconference play for the fifth-ranked Huskies, as Washington makes the first of two trips in quick succession to USC's Galen Center. Before the Dawgs take on the Pac-12 schedule, they will go up against two power conference opponents in Maryland and Oklahoma this Thursday and Friday, Sept. 15-16, with the matches both being televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, the first TV appearance of the year for UW. Washington's matches will both start at 5:00 p.m. with USC playing the same two teams on opposite nights, starting at 7:00 p.m.
This is the third year that Washington, USC, and Maryland have met up in nonconference play at rotating sites. The first year in Seattle, Wisconsin was the fourth team, making for a Pac-12 vs Big Ten Challenge, but the Badgers withdrew and Oklahoma of the Big 12 stepped in for the 2015 version, which took place at the Sooners' home. Now USC takes its turn as host, naming the event the Pac-12 Challenge. Washington has gone 2-0 in the series the past two seasons.
The Huskies spent just one full day back in Seattle after returning from Hawaii on a red eye that left after UW's 3-2 win over Hawaii on Sunday and landed in Seattle early Monday morning. After this week's matches, UW will open Pac-12 play at home against Washington State on Sept. 21, but then will be right back down to the Galen Center to face USC on Friday, Sept. 23.
With the win over 14th-ranked Hawaii, the Huskies improved to 8-0 and got their first ranked win of the season. The win brought some accolades with it, as Crissy Jones was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, her first ever Pac-12 weekly honor, and Kara Bajema won her first Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award. Jones was the Most Outstanding Player at the Hawaii tournament, with Tia Scambray and Courtney Schwan also earning spots on the All-Tournament Team.
Maryland is looking for its first win in the tourney and looks to be an improved squad as the Terrapins have gone 7-2 thus far with one loss to No. 4 Kansas where two sets were decided by just two points. Maryland is hitting .235 and holding opponents to .131, with Gia Milana producing 3.88 kills per set to lead the offense. The Terps are a strong serving team, with 1.44 aces per set and their 3.06 blocks per set rank ninth in the NCAA. Oklahoma has had a strong 9-1 start to its season, losing just once in a five setter to UT San Antonio, and the Sooners have been outstanding on offense, hitting .336, which ranks third overall in the NCAA. Micaela Spann has averaged 2.56 kills per set while hitting .463, with Kimmy Gardiner leading the team with 3.48 kills/set and also hitting an excellent .387. Audrey Alford is leading the offense with 12.06 assists per set. The Huskies pulled out a 3-1 win over Oklahoma last season.
