Dawgs Drop 1-0 Match To OSU
October 30, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – In a match where the Huskies saw plenty of opportunities on offense, the Washington women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net against Oregon State, falling 1-0 in a tough match.
"I thought it was a disappointing result for us," said Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We opened up the game with clear-cut chances to score goals."
After only taking eight shots in their recent win over Oregon, the Huskies found plenty of chances today, equaling their total from Thursday in the first half alone. Five of those shots came within the first five minutes of action, including a shot by Shannon Simon that was saved by the OSU keeper, with Paige Serwold sending the rebounded ball just over the goal. In the fifth minute Simon sent another chip shot at the goal, only to have it saved by Oregon State's Bella Geist, who recorded seven saves on the day.
The Husky defense continued their great play in today's match, holding the Beavers to three shots in the first half, none of which were on goal.
In the second half it was more of the same tough Husky defense and continued pressure by the forwards. Junior Becca Schoales had a good look on goal in the 55th minute, taking a shot that was deflected out of bounds for a corner kick. Both Pascale Dumesnil and Kimberly Keever were able to send shots towards the OSU goal in the following minutes, but unfortunately neither snuck past the keeper.
"I would say when all is said and done for our team, we just lacked in quality in the final third in finishing," said Gallimore. "I would say not just in our finishing, but in our decision making to get open and clear shots."
Following the Husky offensive chances, Oregon State's counter resulted in a yellow card for goalkeeper Sarah Shimer, who came out from her position to stop an open forward, blocking the shot and colliding with their player. Emma Bergstrom's subsequent free kick from just outside the box found the inside of the post to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
"She hit a heck of a free kick to score," said Gallimore. "I don't think Sarah could see it because she didn't go for it, and it went in near-post. That was disappointing, to give up a goal that way."
Down 1-0 and searching for the equalizer, the Husky offense continued to attack and keep possession in Oregon State's territory. A sliding shot by Rachel Wheeler just missed in the 67th minute, followed by a close shot by Simon in the 77th that went high.
"We were holding onto the ball for too long inside when there were numbers in there instead of going out wide," said Gallimore. "Not taking it out wide when we were one-versus-one and not crossing the ball."
While the Dawgs were able to keep the pressure going through the second half, taking nine shots and holding OSU to two, they were unable to come up with the goal and would fall 1-0 in their final home match of the season.
"At the end of the day, just not a lot of quality shots to test their keeper," said Gallimore. "I don't think we were dangerous. We had the ball enough. I thought at the end of the half we pressed them a ton, and didn't let them out of their half. We just didn't really create dangerous chances."
The Huskies now look forward to next week for their final match of the year, against in-state rival Washington State on the road in Pullman on Thursday. The game will be featured on the Pac-12 Networks and kickoff at 7:05 p.m.
