Dawgs Top Hogs In Overtime As Buck Gallops UW Into the Sweet 16
November 20, 2025 | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. โย For the second match running, Alex Buck finished a near full-field run off by hitting the back of the net, scoring the golden goal in Washington's 1-0 overtime win over No. 4 Arkansas to send the Huskies to the Sweet 16.
ย
It is the eighth time in program history that the Huskies have advanced to the round of 16, the first since the spring of 2021.
ย
The goal brings the Husky striker's total for the season up to nine, three during NCAA Tournament play.
ย
Despite a 5-0 lead to start the game for Arkansas, Washington finished with a 17-11 advantage on shots. Tanner Ijams made three saves on the day to secure her 11th clean sheet in 2025.
ย
After weathering an offensive barrage from the Razorbacks through the first five minutes, Washington grew into the match as the half waded on and began to control possession and tempo.
ย
In particular, the rapid pace of Husky striker Alex Buck wore on the Arkansas back line, a sign of things to come, and no more evident than in the 26th minute when the former state track champion broke free 1-on-1 on goal.
ย
Buck dashed into the 18-yard box and was brought down just before unleashing her shot. However, the no foul call was upheld on VAR review, denying the Huskies a spot kick.
ย
The Dawgs finished the first half ferociously, firing off a pair of shots inside the final five seconds. However, Kelsey Branson's attempt was blocked and Buck's buzzer beater follow up was saved as the horn sounded.
ย
Washington continued to pile on the pressure in the second half, firing 11 shots at the Razorback goal. However, the Dawgs were unable to break through during regulation, extending past the 90 minutes.
ย
UW would take just one shot in the overtime period but that's all it would need.
ย
The winner started on the opposite baseline, with Kalea Eichenberger fighting to win a ball near the corner flag. After collecting the ball, the California native hoofed it forward and let Buck and her endless engine do the rest.
ย
Running onto the ball behind the midfield stripe, Buck galloped toward the 18 yards box, slammed on the breaks, cut back onto her right foot and sent a rocket into the side netting on the left side of goal for the winner.
ย
Washington will face host Virginia in the Round of 16, returning to Klöckner Stadium for an 11 a.m. PT kickoff.
