Dawgs Drop Final Match To WSU 0-2
November 03, 2016 | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. – In their final match of the 2016 regular season, the Washington women's soccer team fell to Washington State 0-2 at Lower Soccer Field tonight.
"At the end of the day we just didn't have enough," said Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Not depth, not clutch finishing, and we have no excuses. We played a good Cougar team today but didn't make them earn their goals, and chasing the game became difficult."
The Huskies (7-12-1, 2-9-0 Pac-12) began the match by taking the first two shots in the 7th and 8th minutes, with Shannon Simon narrowly missing the crossbar on a free kick and Pascale Dumesnil sending a great shot toward the goal before it was blocked by the defense. Moments later, the Cougars (8-9-2, 3-7-1 Pac-12) took their first two shots as well, sending a header just over the goal and sending a line-drive at Kaylyn Smith who made the save.
In the 15th minute, Smith ran out from goal to halt a breakaway just outside the box and clear the ball from danger. However, her kick bounced off a Cougar forward who was able to send a slow rolling lob toward the goal, which made its way into the net to give Washington State an early 1-0 lead.
Senior defender Havana McElvaine was active on offense in her final game as a Husky, taking her first shot in the 27th minute that just missed the crossbar. She would finish with two official shots, with her second coming in the 75th minute on a long ball that just missed the goal.
"I'm disappointed for our seniors," said Gallimore. "They have endured a lot and this was not the season they envisioned."
Washington State would extend the lead in the 39th minute, getting an uncontested shot off just at the top of the box that would sneak past Smith.
"As I mentioned to them post-game, a lot of players and teams would have cracked or crumbled in their attitudes," said Gallimore. "This team never stopped playing for one another and never began putting themselves ahead of the team."
In the second half the Huskies sent Sarah Shimer out in goal, and looked to find an opportunity on offense to climb back in the match. In the 71st minute, Dominque Bond-Flasza got a ball into the box in front of Rachel Wheeler, but the Huskies were unable to get a shot off. Freshman Asia Brisco, who played a season-high 40 minutes tonight, took a great shot in the 74th minute that went just over the goal.
The team leader in shots this season, finishing with 57, Simon took two in the 85th minute. The first one was blocked by the Cougar defense, with the follow up going over the crossbar. Washington State grabbed possession at the end of the match to run the final minutes out on the clock and grab the win.
"We'll all use the hard lessons this season to learn and move forward and we'll come back with a vengeance next year to represent UW the way we expect to, which is winning games and making championship runs."
